The Opportunity

The School of Trades and Technology is currently seeking a Heavy Equipment Technician (HET) Instructor. Start date is October 20, 2025. Reporting to the Chair, the successful candidate will be required to prepare and instruct quality lessons and conduct demonstrations as directed in curriculum and course outlines. This is not a remote or hybrid work opportunity; you will be required to work on campus and relocate to Fort McMurray, AB.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop/revise/update courses, including consulting with the Chair, Program Coordinator, faculty, advisory committees, and potential employers and students.
  • Heavy Equipment Technician Diploma curriculum development and review
  • Engage in program development, assisting with the program coordinators, and participating in committee work in support of the department, division, or College.
  • Responsible for developing teaching materials for individualized and group instruction, and incorporate technology into the learning process, where applicable.
  • Carr ying out regularly scheduled instruction, ensuring students awareness of course objectives, approach and evaluation techniques, as well as, recruitment, tutoring and academic counseling of students.
  • Teaching responsibilities will include theory and lab. This may involve evenings and weekends on occasion which will be scheduled in advance.
  • Take the opportunity to participate in showcasing and promoting Keyano College and the HET & Extended Studies Department in the community.
Qualifications
  • Alberta Journeyperson Heavy Equipment Technician certification with interprovincial Red Seal certification
  • Minimum 5 years’ post-journeyperson experience
  • Strong communication skills
  • Knowledge and diagnostic experience on Tier 4 Cummins Emissions and Electronic Fuel Injection.
  • Detroit mechanical engine repair experience is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge in hydraulics, electrical, brakes, automatic, powershift and standard transmissions, air conditioning, and mechanical fuel injection
  • Knowledge of engine repair, experience with computer diagnostics.
  • Komatsu and CAT experience.
