Overview
Indigenous Land-Based Outdoor Educator — Evergreen Brick Works, Toronto, ON. Location: Evergreen Brick Works, Don Valley, Toronto ON. This role supports Evergreen’s Indigenous Land Connections (ILC) offering as part of the Visiting Schools Program, guiding Indigenous-led immersive experiences through Evergreen Brick Works with Indigenous Seasonal Teachings.

What You’ll Do
- Deliver engaging public and private educational classes and outdoor nature-based activities for children, youth and adults who attend Evergreen’s Nature Play and Learning Programs (e.g., Visiting Schools Program, Camps, Nature School, Team Building or Tours).
- Contribute to the development and delivery of the Indigenous Land Connections offering as part of the Visiting Schools Program, Professional Development for Educators and Community Partnerships.
- Facilitate land-based and nature-connected programs that reflect Evergreen’s core Education and Children’s Programs values: Place-Based, Ecological, Experiential, Active and Mobile, Arts-Infused, Integrated, Inclusive.
- Be a contact in hosting Indigenous communities, organizations, and partners visiting Brick Works; depending on teachings and skills, may include fire keeping, caring for medicines, and participating in ceremony.
- Deliver programming using loose parts, natural materials, and inquiry-based learning approaches.
- Reflect on work to solve problems and improve programs.
- Deliver programs safely according to Evergreen policies and training, including healthy risk-taking and regular risk assessments.
- Provide a welcoming experience for visitors and act as an Evergreen ambassador, liaising with teachers, parents/guardians, and volunteers.
- Document and report issues regarding incidents, customer service, program spaces and materials.
- Seasonal assistance with summer camps or winter skating programs may be required.

Target qualifications and core competencies:
- Must be First Nations, Métis, and/or Inuit. Evergreen may request membership or citizenship documentation for roles using Indigenous Knowledge or dedicated to Indigenous communities as part of reconciliation.
- 1–3 years of education or experience in children's environmental education or related fields.
- Experience and comfort facilitating learning experiences for all ages.
- Experience delivering educational and/or experiential programs outdoors.
- Experience working with individuals of different ages, cultures, backgrounds, and abilities.
- Ability to anticipate, understand, and respond to participants with care and creativity, fostering an environment that supports learning.
- Adaptability to changing priorities and conditions; respond to change with curiosity and energy.
- Excellent communication skills (speaking, listening, and writing) using age-appropriate tools and techniques.
- Current Standard First Aid & CPR C training (or willingness to obtain pre-start).
- Successful police reference check (provided by Evergreen).
You Might Have The Following Assets
- Experience with Forest & Nature School practices and/or Nature Connection Routines.
- Experience with experiential, emergent, inquiry-based, play-based, or place-based learning approaches.
- Naturalist or ecological knowledge, Indigenous land-based knowledge.
- Fluent in French.
- Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT) or Early Childhood Educator (ECE) qualification.
Other Information
This is a part-time, hourly role. Target hire rate: $23.74/hour. Vacation pay is 4% of earnings. On-site work at Brick Works in Toronto for in-person programming. Working with children and outdoors (including possible inclement weather). Shifts of 5 to 8 hours; available Monday to Sunday (especially weekdays during school hours). Supervisory oversight by the Program Manager.
