Heavy Duty Mechanic

Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools

The incumbent is responsible for performing all assigned tasks in a safe, efficient and effective manner. Not to be confined to shop activities alone, the mechanic is also expected to do field repair work on down buses either within the city limits or in the rural areas.

Must work in accordance with OH&S Safety Regulations, Government Inspecting Standards and Division best practices. Must be able to work cooperatively with Operations Personnel, School Bus Drivers and fellow workers.

Specific Accountabilities
  • Adhere to the Division standards and processes in the completion of all documentation associated with equipment repairs.
  • Works to ensure that goals related to efficiencies and daily operational needs are achieved.
  • Follows procedures and guidelines as established by Red Deer Catholic School Division.
  • Complete and sign off government six‑month inspections.
  • Works with shop management to maintain schedule compliance and priorities.
  • Diagnose equipment problems as reported by operations personnel (drivers, dispatch, etc.).
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work environment on a daily basis.
  • Suggest areas where training is needed, and is prepared to attend selected training programs.
  • Maintains positive and professional relationships with co‑workers, drivers and operational staff.
Standards of Performance
  • Consistently able to perform tasks related to position.
  • Day to day job performance meets standards.
  • Exhibits strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Attendance: reports on time, stays on job and has no unexcused absences.
  • Health and Safety Knowledge: adheres to the Division & Government OH&S Rules and Regulations.
  • Able to work safely.
Qualifications
Education:
  • Journeyman Heavy Duty Technician.
  • Grade 12.
  • Mechanic courses an asset.
Training:
  • Valid Driver's license (Class 2 ideal; training will be provided).
  • WHMIS certification.
  • Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program License.
  • Q Endorsement an asset.
Experience:
  • 2‑5 years related experience.
  • Analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to read, operate, and comprehend diagnostic and manual measuring tools (micrometers, brake drum gauge, OHM meters).
Other Requirements:
  • Must have hand tools to perform all tasks associated with position.
  • Must be able to read and comprehend parts and service manuals.
  • Exposure to computer diagnostic equipment.
