As the country HSE Specialist you play a critical role in ensuring health, safety, and environmental standards are upheld in Valmet's locations. You will collaborate deeply with the local organizations, and take strong responsibility for achieving world-class HSE performance.

You will work closely with HSE professionals in the Area and the business lines as well as with management teams, the HR function, the Occupational Health Services provider, GMS concept owner, the quality function, line managers and employees in the country.

You will work closely with the Valmet locations in:

  • Montreal
  • Trois-Rivieres
  • Toronto
  • Thunder Bay

Improvement plans, initiatives and actions

  • Analyze and assess the needs, gaps and opportunities in Country HSE performance as input to reviews, target setting, plans and preventive initiatives and actions
  • Lead and manage incident investigation, root cause analyses, corrective action and lessons learned implementation in the Country

Act as country subject matter expert (SME) for HSE and point of contact

  • Participate as subject matter expert (SME) in the assessment of HSE aspects and impacts, and in the design of controls, for development programs and other changes initiated in the Country
  • Represent Country in the Area HSE team and participate in workgroups, tasks and programs
  • Support locations to solve HSE issues and improve HSE performance

Develop, maintain and implement global management system

  • Implement GMS HSE processes and develop, implement and maintain needed country HSE procedures, and perform tasks as defined in these processes and procedures
  • Secure effective HSE compliance management in Country, and ensure HSE permits are valid
  • Manage GMS certification in the Country for ISO 14001 and 45001 including implementation of expansion roadmap, audits and global learnings

Provide accurate HSE reporting

  • Provide reporting and analysis on Country HSE performance status
  • Oversee that regulatory, as well as Valmet HSE reporting requirements are met in the Country
Basic requirements
  • Education: Minimum High School graduate. Bachelor's degree in safety, environmental, or other relevant field preferred.
  • Several years’ experience working in HSE in a similar environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and French
  • Experience of driving continuous improvement activities.
  • Knowledge of ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management system standards and certifications. Work with other standards is merited.
  • Proficiency with local, and federal safety/environmental regulations.
  • Result-driven and can structure own work.
  • Good communication, teamwork and relationship building skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, SharePoint, Teams.
  • Ability to travel 40% to other Valmet facilities and customer sites
