Mount Royal University\'s Financial Services is responsible for the accurate and timely recording, analysis and reporting of all financial information for the University, MRU Foundation, and Mount Royal Early Learning Centre. About the Role

Reporting to the Manager, Resource Planning, the Finance Partner (FP) / Finance Business Partner (FBP) is a professionally designated accountant within the Resource Planning group of Finance. Although not directly responsible for administering budgets, the incumbent plays a key role in influencing and directing work that significantly impacts financial and budget results. Peer leadership is essential to gather relevant information for decision making, to ensure University objectives are met, while maintaining appropriate boundaries with those in direct management roles. The incumbent performs responsibilities using their education and experience, adhering to policy and regulatory requirements, applying an institutional perspective, using professional judgment and best practices as a guide.

The role has focused accountability to Finance Services and for the supported client areas, in addition to carrying out the fundamental duties and responsibilities of a professional accountant for MRU. The FP/FBP provides expert knowledge and advice to support the financial, regulatory and general accounting needs of designated business units by developing partnerships and meeting their unique needs. Flexibility is required as workloads must be constantly evaluated and re-prioritized within strict deadlines and varying business cycles as new initiatives emerge.

This is a full-time role, working 35 hours per week.

Responsibilities

Decision Support:

  • Support strategic and operational decision making by developing and preparing financial analysis and reports for internal users to support their decisions, ensuring required documentation standards are considered from operational and audit perspectives.
  • Prepare financial analysis and reporting to assist management in assessing impacts, fiscal viability and sustainability, including engagement during planning cycles and at fiscal year-end.
  • Analyze and compile data from multiple sources to prepare long-range projections and immediate impact analyses for operating performance, proposed program changes, capital expenditures, labour negotiation impacts, and other ad hoc requests.
  • Recommend changes to significant financial projections and estimates to inform annual and 3-year strategic and budget planning cycles.
  • Develop and test financial estimates based on historical trends; monitor significant financial components for future budget planning and variance analysis.
  • Provide reporting to stakeholders by analyzing results, identifying trends and variances, and designing reporting for accurate forecasting and performance measurement.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to assess and analyze business processes and system needs; recommend improvements or redesigns to achieve objectives.

Reporting:

  • Support client areas in financial planning and reporting of results; coordinate with senior managers to ensure significant transactions are represented in period close reporting; ensure accounting standards and University policies are adhered to.
  • Monitor and communicate changes in accounting standards and provincial reporting requirements; recommend policy changes to accommodate needs and timelines.
  • Provide assurance of complex financial information for internal and external users, including reporting to external bodies such as the Provincial Ministry, donors, funding agencies, government and sponsors.

Support and Training:

  • Provide expert advice and training on general accounting, budgeting, internal controls, decision-support information structures and systems, and financial system design.
  • Support audit-ready financial statements and working papers; provide expert support to business units on tools and processes while ensuring accounting accuracy and compliance.
  • Offer specialist financial, accounting, and strategic knowledge to support decision making; mentor and train within Finance and other units.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Provide expertise on internal controls, policies, government regulations, accounting standards, and tax rules for compliance and operational improvement; monitor gaps and address impact on risk programs.

  • Chartered Professional Accountant Designation (CPA)
  • 6 - 10+ years\' experience
  • Progressive experience in complex scenarios; strong experience with technology-related controls integrated with financial accounting
  • Attention to detail, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong forecasting and budget modelling capabilities
  • Ability to understand financial reporting impacts for decision making
  • Strong prioritization and communication skills; capable of working independently
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, especially Excel, Word, Access

Salary: $99,756.00 - 112,952.00 per annum
