Emergency Department Nurse Practitioner (NP)

Manitoulin Health Centre is looking for a full-time Emergency Department Nurse Practitioner to work at its Mindemoya hospital site.

The Emergency Department Nurse Practitioner (ED NP) is a self-directed advanced practice nurse, who functions in an expanded nursing role in a collaborative practice model. Working in collaboration with emergency physicians, the Nurse Practitioner manages, directs, and provides comprehensive care for a select patient population in a collaborative interdisciplinary team environment.

JOB DUTIES
  • Assess, diagnose, and manage episodic illnesses, injuries, and acute exacerbations of chronic diseases within the Nurse Practitioner scope of practice and/or through use of relevant medical directives.
  • Responsible for patients who present to the ER with CTAS level 4 and 5.
  • Assist with CTAS level 1, 2, and 3 patients under physician supervision.
  • Analyze and interpret patients’ histories, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses.
  • Provide medical orders to other members of the Nursing Team to implement the care plan.
  • Determine the need for and order from an approved list of diagnostic tests / procedures and interpret the results of such tests, within Nurse Practitioner scope of practice.
  • Complete accurate, legible, and timely documentation of all patients for which they are providing care.
  • Follow up with / refer to physician on-call for all issues that fall outside of the NP scope of practice.
  • Liaison with physicians in providing support to hospitalist role.
  • Provide clinical leadership and guidance to Emergency Room staff and act as a team player and assist Emergency Department nurses as necessary.
  • Act as a Super User for the Meditech Expanse Emergency Department and Order Management Module.
  • Liaise and maintain good working relationships with external parties including policing services and local family health teams.
  • Support Manitoulin Health Centre’s satellite Chemotherapy department as required.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team in teaching other clinicians as necessary.
  • Member of the MHC Emergency Department Committee.
  • Promote a respectful environment.
  • Attend mandatory in‑services and commitment to professional development.
  • Promote a healthy and safe working environment in accordance with the occupational health and safety guidelines, providing a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Participate in departmental quality initiatives and risk management program.
  • Ability to work cross‑site as needed for organizational demands.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Hold and maintain current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario in the RN Extended Class.
  • Experience working in Acute Care / Emergency Department is required.
  • Leadership, critical thinking, organizational, and communication skills are required.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Hold appropriate professional liability protection as per College of Nurses of Ontario requirement.
  • Self‑motivated with strong health assessment and clinical skills.
  • Experience working with mental health and substance use disorders is an asset.
  • Current ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification.
  • Current NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification.
  • Current TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course).
  • Current ATCN (Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses).
  • Current CAN (Canadian Nurses Association) certification.
  • Current PALS (Paediatric Advanced Life Support).
  • Triage training as per eCTAS guidelines.
