Job summary

A leading energy firm in Alberta is seeking an experienced Electrical Advisor – VFD Specialist to provide technical support for Variable Frequency Drives. Candidates must have at least 7 years of field experience and strong problem-solving skills in relation to VFD systems. This position requires familiarity with industry standards and will primarily be based in Fort McMurray. Competitive relocation support is available for eligible individuals.

We have an exciting role for Electrical Advisor – VFD Specialist! In this role, you will be accountable to provide Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) technical support to maintain reliable operations at Suncor Base Plant/ Syncrude Aurora site.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure the reliability and functionality of variable frequency drives (VFD) across site. Provide technical expertise for maintenance and troubleshooting of VFD issues with a goal of minimizing downtime
  • Continuously seek opportunities to optimize and improve VFD systems to enhance performance and compliance
  • Ensure all VFD work complies with industry standards, regulations, and company policies. Stay updated on best practices and technological advancements
  • Address complex VFD issues that require innovative and practical solutions
  • Perform failure analysis, root cause analysis, and incident investigations related to VFDs for issues such as repetitive equipment failure
  • Coordinate implementation of reliability improvement initiatives in conjunction with the equipment asset owners
  • Provide guidance on VFD equipment strategies
  • Ensure proactive analysis of critical systems through network programs and implement the appropriate path forward prior to an issue occurring
Qualifications
  • Minimum seven years of field experience with extensive knowledge of MV VFD systems in Utilities, Mining, or Oil & Gas
  • Must be an experienced Electrician, Engineering Technologist, and/or Electrical Engineer
  • Familiarity with Canadian and Alberta fire safety codes is an asset
  • Strong knowledge of VFD brands (e.g., ABB, Siemens, Rockwell, Schneider Electric) and their programming interfaces
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills for diagnosing and resolving VFD issues in a timely manner
  • Proficient communication skills to lead investigations involving multi-disciplinary stakeholders
  • Experience with industrial communication protocol
  • Computer fluent MS/Office and experience with SAP
Location and other Key Details
  • You will work out of our Base Plant Mine or Syncrude Aurora site in Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the possibility of overtime based on business needs
  • This position is safety sensitive
  • If you reside outside of Fort McMurray, relocation of your primary residence to within 60 km of Fort McMurray is mandatory. Relocation support will be provided; we offer competitive housing assistance to eligible individuals
