The Canadian Jewish News (The CJN) is a not-for-profit, award-winning media organization that offers a unique and varied approach to journalism on a daily basis through multimedia storytelling and reporting, ensuring our audience is accurately informed when news breaks. The CJN is Canada’s leading source for local, national and international information impacting the Jewish community nationally while striving to grow awareness and engagement with the next generation of Jewish readers, listeners and influencers.

About the opportunity

The Canadian Jewish News is seeking a visionary and experienced Editorial Director to lead our editorial team and oversee all content creation and journalistic operations. The Editorial Director will be responsible for setting and executing the editorial vision across all platforms, ensuring content excellence, integrity, and relevance for a broad Jewish Canadian audience. This leadership role reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer and serves as a strategic bridge between editorial and business functions, helping ensure editorial initiatives are aligned with organizational goals and audience-engagement strategies. The ideal candidate brings a deep understanding of digital and print journalism, a passion for Jewish community issues, and a commitment to innovation, inclusion, and editorial independence.

Key Responsibilities
Leadership
  • Set and execute editorial vision across digital, print, audio and social platforms.
  • Uphold journalistic integrity, diversity of voices, and a balanced, non-partisan voice that reflects the broad spectrum of Canadian Jewish life.
  • Lead editors, staff, and freelancers with clear guidance, mentorship, and performance standards.
  • Maintain awareness of current events and cultural trends relevant to the Jewish community.
  • Oversee development, editing, and timely publishing of news, features, podcasts and newsletters.
  • Experiment with emerging formats (video, live events, new platforms) to expand storytelling.
  • Ensure high-quality, accurate content with strong headlines, visuals, and layouts.
Strategic and Partnerships
  • Act as the bridge between editorial and business teams, aligning content with organizational goals.
  • Develop editorial initiatives that align with The CJN’s goals and future roadmap.
  • Establish guidelines to ensure consistency across the editorial portfolio.
  • Collaborate with fundraising and marketing teams on revenue-driven initiatives while protecting independence.
  • Represent The CJN externally at events, conferences, and community forums; work with the CEO to build media partnerships.
Audience & Analytics
  • Grow and diversify The CJN’s audience, especially in target demographics.
  • Develop and oversee social media and digital distribution strategies.
  • Use analytics (Google Analytics, social insights, A / B testing) to guide content and optimize engagement.
Operations & Talent Development
  • Recruit, coach, and mentor editorial staff and freelancers, fostering a collaborative newsroom culture.
  • Fill in editorial gaps during absences, ensuring continuity.
  • Contribute to budget planning, risk management (ethics / legal), and alignment with current cultural trends.
Qualifications, Technical Skills and Requirements
  • Minimum 10 years of recent progressive editorial experience , including at least one leadership role in a newsroom.
  • Proven record of successfully working / progressing in digital and / or print journalism environments .
  • Proven understanding of journalistic ethics, editorial independence, and media best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage editorial workflows.
  • Strong editing, writing, fact-checking, and communication skills.
  • Impeccable attention to detail in copy editing to ensure consistency across all published materials.
  • Experience with podcast production and digital content distribution is a strong asset.
  • Solid knowledge of and sensitivity to the Canadian Jewish landscape.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with people at all levels internally and externally.
  • Must be legally entitled to work and reside in Canada.
  • Exceptional command of English language.
  • Strong understanding of CP style.
  • Commitment to inclusive journalism and audience growth.
  • Adaptable, organized, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
