Overview

This employment opportunity is restricted to residents of Iqaluit.

Reporting to the Deputy Minister, Intergovernmental Affairs, the Director, Elders' Secretariat is responsible for overseeing the strategic planning, development, management and integration of government policies and programs to allow Elders to age with dignity in Nunavut, improve services to Elders, improve the economic and social status of Elders, and reduce barriers to quality of life for Elders. The position leads and coordinates Government of Nunavut efforts to serve Elders including establishing and supporting partnerships with Inuit organizations, non-profit organizations, and municipalities to ensure effective implementation of the GN's Elders' Strategy. The position is the government’s representative on the Seniors Federal/Provincial/ Territorial Officials Committee.

Responsibilities

The position contributes to and impacts directly on the ability of the Government to deliver on several specific priorities as set out in Katujjiluta. The Director will coordinate the work of the Elders Secretariat, including implementation of Aging with Dignity, Elders and Seniors Strategy. The Director will often facilitate liaisons between conflicting groups or organizations, which can be mentally and emotionally draining and requires tact, confidence and diplomacy. Providing motivation to committees requires much enthusiasm, confidence, and sensitivity to inter-cultural relations.

Qualifications

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized degree in Social Science, Public Administration, Law or related, along with three (3) years of practical experience working with advocacy groups, in strategic planning of governance, or design of social programs. Two (2) years of experience managing staff, along with experience managing budgets are required. This is a Position of Trust and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.

Languages and Assets

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
