Job Summary
The Corporate Accounting / Seasonal Tax Associate Co-op will be responsible for preparing Canadian Personal Income tax returns for a wide range of clients. Previous experience in preparing US Personal Income Tax Returns is preferable but not required. Previous experience in preparing T3 T4 and T5 slips is required. Previous experience in preparing GST / HST returns is preferred but not required. This position will allow the successful candidate to further develop their career skills.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Prepare required tax slips (e.g. T3 T4 T5 GST / HST returns etc.) and organize files for Canada UK and US tax returns as needed with accuracy and adherence to regulatory requirements.
- Compile, calculate, tabulate, verify, prepare and organize financial and tax data into structured formats such as schedules, spreadsheets, returns and other work reports for analysis, supporting evidence and filing.
- Responsible for preparing Canadian tax returns for both residents and non-residents ensuring compliance with relevant tax laws and timely delivery of client-facing materials including draft correspondence and responses to tax authorities.
- Deliverables undergo thorough self-review with any tax issues or uncertainties escalated to senior team members for resolution as necessary.
- Contact clients by phone and/or email to obtain all related tax information to complete return; follow-up on communications with clients is drafted professionally and clearly to request necessary information in a timely manner.
- Draft correspondence for interactions with tax authorities including but not limited to the CRA, IRS and HMRC (depending on team) addressing tax inquiries and audits effectively.
- Continuous Learning and Tax Knowledge Growth: Ongoing efforts are made to enhance knowledge of Canadian, UK and U.S. personal income tax, international tax treaties, corporate business income tax, sales tax, double tax treaties, regulatory issues and payroll matters (depending on team).
- Tax research programs and resources available are utilized as needed to ensure accurate interpretations of tax laws, regulations and compliance requirements and applied to support accurate filings, advisory services and client inquiries.
- Adapt to additional tasks and responsibilities as needed to support the team.
Qualifications & Education Requirements
- Pursuing a bachelor's degree in accounting is preferred.
- 4 months – 1 year of work experience with the preparation of tax returns is considered an asset.
- Aptitude for working with numbers and math formulas is required.
- Proficient with software applications / programs including MS Office (Word, PowerPoint Excel Outlook).
- Familiarity with CCH Axcess Tax or Tax Prep preferred.
- Willingness to learn new software packages and systems. Staying updated with new tools and systems relevant to the role.
Working Conditions
- Workdays are regular business hours 9:00am-5:30pm and will require in-office attendance.
- May be required to work outside regular hours to meet workload demands and/or deadlines.
