Job Title: Clinical Nursing Instructor

Course: NUSC 3P9 2 – Mental Health – Long Term Care home (5 positions)

Department: Nursing

Term of Appointment: Contracts for this course are for 12 completed shifts, which include clinical time, post-conference and preparation time. Clinical days may be scheduled on Monday, Tuesday, Saturday or Sunday, based on student registration numbers.

Each week includes:

  • One 11-hour clinical shift (06:30–17:30)
  • One 1-hour virtual post-conference (day and time to be determined by the Clinical Nurse Instructor and students)

Nominal Hours: 216

Wage Rate: $43.26-$49.95 per hour

Note: The wage rate is determined by seniority as outlined in Article 16 and Appendix B of the CUPE 4207-Unit 4 collective agreement.

Duties:

  • Prepare for and supervise students in a clinical setting for the experiential component of the course.
  • Collaborate with the course instructor and lab coordinator to ensure student activities are aligned with the course syllabus and learning objectives.
  • Prepare patient assignments before students’ arrival on the unit (for hospital placements), carefully considering each student’s experience level and course learning objectives.
  • Review the student’s preparation and plan for their clinical activities with attention to nursing, pathophysiological, pharmacologic, and therapeutic concepts.
  • Encourage an inquiring, theory- and evidence-based approach to nursing practice.
  • Facilitate interprofessional and intraprofessional communication among students and all members of the health care team or agency.
  • Model patient-centered care.
  • Familiarize students with relevant policies and protocols in the clinical setting with emphasis on health and safety requirements.
  • Provide ongoing verbal feedback to students and maintain a professional relationship with all learners.
  • Assess journal reflections and learning plans, and provide constructive feedback. Mark all assignments designated as the responsibility of the Clinical Nursing Instructor in the syllabus.
  • Complete regular, comprehensive anecdotal notes regarding student progress and advise the course professor immediately of serious or ongoing student concerns.
  • Identify gaps and facilitate the development and implementation of student plans in partnership with the course instructor as required.
  • Facilitate student meetings and post-clinical conferences, and coordinate appropriate resources (e.g., multimedia). Foster discussion and reflection to enhance a positive and respectful learning environment.
  • Adhere to confidentiality and privacy standards and legislation.

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a BScN; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical work experience as a nurse.
  • Clinical work experience in long-term care home within the last 10 years and/or clinical teaching experience in long term care/gerontology within the last 10 years.
  • Desire to instruct and share knowledge with nursing students, with a course focus on gerontological mental health.
  • Previous experience as a preceptor or with clinical instruction would be an asset.
  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to address concerns, manage difficult situations, and identify and act upon emergency situations.
  • Effective organizational, time management, and communication skills.
  • Ability to provide a valid Vulnerable Sector Check prior to the contract start date; the check must be no greater than 6 months old as of the contract start date.
  • Ability to meet clinical site occupational and immunization requirements.

Note: Successful applicants are expected to supervise all scheduled/rescheduled clinical dates for the course they accept to ensure consistency and improve the clinical experience for students. Conflicts with another employer or vacation requests will generally not be approved.
