Job Type: Casual - required to be available to work a minimum of three days per week

Salary: $29.95 per hour (effective September 1 2025)

Main Responsibilities

The Child and Youth Worker (CYW) provides instructional support in academic, social, physical, emotional, and behavioural programs for students in various learning situations. The CYW performs personal care duties as needed and collaborates with the student support team to deliver, develop, and implement programs for students with social, emotional, and/or behavioural needs, and assists in developing programs to support students, families, and school personnel.

  • Provide identified students with support as per strategies recommended by occupational, physical, and communication therapists.
  • Transfer and lift students using appropriate and safe techniques and devices.
  • Provide toileting, changing, repositioning, and dressing assistance.
  • Assist students with mobility as required.
  • Assist in the operation of specialized equipment.
  • Assist in developing and implementing Student Safety Plans under the direction of the classroom teacher and/or school principal/vice-principal.
  • Perform clean and intermittent catheterization.
  • Perform shallow and surface suctioning.
  • Provide assistance with glucometer, insulin pump, and other diabetes-related procedures with training as required.
  • Provide hand-over-hand feeding, food preparation, adapted feeding tools, modeling, and monitoring for choking.
  • Administer routine medication as permitted under RHPA.
  • Monitor and track the health needs of the student.
  • Promote social communication and behavioural skill development using Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) strategies.
  • Assist with supervision on class trips, in classrooms, washrooms, hallways, yard, lunch, examinations, transportation, and other activities as needed.
  • Assist with safety issues including emergency evacuations and medical emergencies.
  • Participate as a member of the school collaborative team and discuss student progress and needs while maintaining confidentiality.
Program Support
  • Provide program support by assisting teachers with delivery of academic and social/life skills programs for individuals and groups, planning and implementing effective learning support strategies.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional support methods and aids to keep students on task and reinforce concepts.
  • Provide information to teachers to assist in creating student IEPs.
  • Support students in the use of assistive technology.
  • Deliver life skills and activities of daily living to promote independence, self-advocacy, and self-reliance.
  • Guide and assist students with co-op placements and other experiential learning as required.
  • Teach personal hygiene and restroom routines.
  • Collect, monitor, and record data on assigned students, document observations, and identify intervention strategies.
  • Under the direction of the principal, communicate effectively with the school community, assist with record keeping, and share observations with school/board personnel, approved agencies, and guardians.
  • Develop, review, and distribute materials; research programs.
  • Assist with guiding cooperative education students and/or volunteers as directed.
  • Provide professional learning sessions for school staff and the community on social-emotional learning.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the teacher and principal.
Qualifications
  • Three-year college diploma or undergraduate university degree in Child and Youth Work, or related/equivalent education.
  • Minimum of one year of related experience.
  • Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCVI) Certification (Full Program).
  • Police record check with a Vulnerable Sector Search and Pardoned Sexual Offenders Database Search within 6 months prior to hire.
