Qualifications

Salary range for the position is $74,618 to $107,264. Interior Health establishes salaries within the minimum and maximum of the salary range based on consideration of the qualifications, experience of the applicant, and an internal equity review of the salaries of other employees.

How will you create an impact

The Capital Accountant provides leadership within the Capital Accounting Department, coordinates internal and external financial reporting, and manages the recording and tracking of all capital asset acquisitions and disposals for Interior Health. This role supports decision‑making, project planning, and the responsible stewardship of public funds.

In alignment with IH’s Occupational Health & Safety Program, employees shall adhere to all Occupational Health and Safety policies and procedures at all times and attend all required training. Employees are responsible to report any identified hazards, unsafe conditions or incidents to your manager or supervisor immediately.

What will you work on
  • Responsible for all aspects of accounting and financial management reporting functions for all capital transactions for IH in accordance with organizational policies, relevant accounting standards, MIS Guidelines, and governmental requirements.
  • Ensures all financial transactions have been reflected appropriately and completely in the financial statements.
  • Supports the management of the Fixed Asset sub‑ledger through ensuring timely and accurate recording of additions, disposals, transfers, and amortization.
  • Supports the Manager, Capital Accounting in coordinating activities of staff engaged in these functions to deliver operational efficiency and effectiveness; this includes the setting of processing priorities and deadlines, assigning workload within a portfolio, and authorizing required journal entries.
  • Provides input and makes recommendations to the Manager, Capital Accounting on financial issues as they relate to capital policies, processes, procedures and accounting standards.
  • Prepares, delegates, and reviews internal period end reports, reconciliations, and working papers.
  • Assists in the compilation and preparation of financial reports for submission to the appropriate governing bodies (i.e. Appendix C, Quarterly Financial Public Reporting, Federal Statistical Reports, Capital Budget, and Cash Flow reports, etc.).
  • Works collaboratively with and supports the Capital Budgets and Planning team in delivering organizational capital budget reports and analysis.
  • Support the development of capital reporting tools, templates, and process improvements, and the automation of systems to increase efficiency within IH.
  • Provides input to the hiring, discipline, and termination of staff.

Education, Training and Experience
  • A Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or a related field
  • CPA designation (or working towards one)
  • A minimum of five years of experience in a complex environment
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, including the ability to present financial information clearly with non‑financial stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in understanding PSAB standards, capital accounting concepts, and/or project accounting.
  • Excellent knowledge of financial management and reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively in a highly dynamic environment subject to continuous change.
  • Excellent knowledge of complex computerized systems.
  • Ability to analyze and present complex financial data using Excel and other Microsoft tools to support decision‑making and reporting.
  • Sound understanding of current healthcare issues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a proven ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
