Job description
Overview

AFL is a global leader in fiber optics, providing integrated solutions in engineering, construction, installation, and repair services for broadband networks. Known for its innovation, AFL began in 1984 with a single product and has grown into a billion-dollar company serving telecom, oil and gas, and utilities markets worldwide.

AFL is committed to environmental responsibility, employee well-being, and community engagement through grants, service projects, and sustainability initiatives. Backed by Fujikura Ltd, a $6 billion company with over 128 years of innovation, AFL offers a culture of collaboration, growth, and stability with operations across Canada, the U.S., Mexico, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

AFL is seeking a sharp Business Analyst with analytical firepower, crystal-clear communication, and problem-solving grit to transform raw data into strategic wins. You\'ll bridge business needs and technical delivery—mastering Power BI, data modeling, and Microsoft automation to empower PMO, Finance, and cross-functional teams with timely, actionable insights.

Reporting to the Manager of Data and Analytics, the Business Analyst will maintain and improve existing BI solutions while contributing to new initiatives that support accurate and timely reporting for internal and external stakeholders. The Business Data Analyst will work closely with cross‑functional teams and executives, leveraging strong communication and analytical skills to translate business needs into scalable, reliable data solutions.

What you will do
  • Support full lifecycle report development, including requirements gathering, data modeling, ETL, visualization, and deployment.
  • Design and maintain datasets, data models, and data extractions for reporting across Engineering, Project Management, Construction, Supply Chain, and other business units.
  • Build and maintain Power BI datasets, reports, and dashboards using data modeling best practices.
  • Use Power Automate to streamline data refreshes, automate business processes, and optimize reporting workflows.
  • Connect to and manage data sources including SharePoint Lists and libraries, SQL databases, REST APIs, etc.
  • Identify data quality issues in source systems, collaborate with stakeholders to resolve them, and recommend improvements.
  • Partner with cross‑functional teams to translate business needs into technical specifications and reporting solutions.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation covering reports, datasets, ETL pipelines, data models, automations, and business processes to support long‑term sustainability and team knowledge retention.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on system optimization, automation, and reporting efficiency, including the adoption and integration of AI‑driven tools.
  • Follow and promote AFL’s environmental, health, and safety policies.
What you bring
  • Hands‑on experience developing Power BI solutions (Desktop & Service) in a production or enterprise environment.
  • Experience in DAX, data modeling, and BI development workflows.
  • Experience using SharePoint as a data source (Lists, document libraries, folder connectors).
  • Experience or demonstrated interest in learning Microsoft Power Platform tools (Power Automate, Power Apps).
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with attention to data accuracy, including the ability to normalize inconsistent client data for analytics‑ready ingestion.
  • Excellent communication skills for gathering business requirements and explaining technical concepts to non‑technical audiences.
  • Self‑driven, curious, and eager to learn new tools and technologies.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently or collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment.
Nice To Have
  • Experience with SQL for querying and basic data transformations.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft cloud technologies (Azure, Power Platform administration, etc.).
  • Background or domain experience in Telecommunications or Construction.
  • Experience with automation or ETL tooling beyond the Microsoft Power Platform.
Working Conditions
  • Hybrid office environment
  • General hours of Monday through Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm
  • Some travel may be required
