The Automation Programmer supports project design by reviewing drawings for accuracy and ensuring compliance with project requirements. Success in this role requires strong technical knowledge, analytical thinking, and the ability to work closely with multiple teams to ensure building automation systems are installed, commissioned, and integrated effectively.

Primary Responsibilities
Programming & Technical Support
  • Review engineering drawings and technical documents to build safe, efficient control sequences.
  • Create graphical user interfaces (GUIs) that help operators visualize and interact with system components.
  • Configure and program PLCs and communication protocols such as BACnet, LonWorks, and Modbus.
  • Mentor junior programmers and provide ongoing technical support to build team expertise.
  • Verify design documents and programming logic to ensure alignment with system requirements and operational intent.
  • Perform quality reviews of design drawings to confirm accuracy and compliance.
  • Assist installation personnel with diagnosing and resolving technical issues in the field.
  • Work collaboratively with design and installation groups to keep projects on track and promptly resolve challenges.
Commissioning & Field Service
  • Commission building automation systems and confirm that programmed sequences operate according to design.
  • Use BAS tools to remotely monitor systems and troubleshoot mechanical or technical issues affecting building performance or comfort.
  • Participate in rotational on-call duties, providing after-hours support when required (evenings and weekends).
System Integration & Optimization
  • Support the integration of third-party devices and systems (e.g., BACnet, Tridium, OPC Server, VFDs, boilers, smart sensors).
  • Develop energy-conscious control strategies to improve system efficiency.
  • Design and implement improvements that enhance system reliability and operational performance.
Communication & Collaboration
  • Communicate clearly with clients, coworkers, and stakeholders regarding project progress, technical concerns, and recommended improvements.
  • Coordinate with contractors and consultants to quickly address project challenges.
  • Maintain regular customer follow-up for both project-related and service-related activities.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Post-secondary education in Electronics, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related discipline, with 5+ years of hands‑on experience programming, commissioning, and maintaining HVAC control systems.
  • Engineering Technologist or CET certification is an advantage.
  • Strong knowledge of control systems such as Honeywell, Reliable, Tridium Niagara, or Alerton.
  • Solid computer programming skills and a strong understanding of networking.
  • Excellent organizational abilities with a track record of meeting deadlines.
  • Skilled at diagnosing and solving system issues efficiently.
  • Team‑oriented, eager to learn, and willing to share expertise with others.
  • Strong interest in coaching and mentoring team members.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication; additional language skills are beneficial.
  • Comfortable delivering presentations and training end‑users on system operation.
