Role Overview

The Associate Editor – Print will be responsible for end-to-end execution of Champak’s print editions while also supporting special editorial projects such as special issues, one-off publications, compilations, educational initiatives, and cross-functional editorial assignments. The role demands strong editorial judgement, execution excellence, and coordination across teams.

Key Responsibilities
End-to-End Magazine Ownership
  • Independently manage assigned magazine issues from planning to final print sign-off.
  • Drive issue planning, theme finalization, and detailed content mapping.
  • Ensure all editorial deliverables are completed as per production schedules.
Editorial Planning & Content Ownership
  • Conceptualize age-appropriate stories, puzzles, activities, and engagement formats for children aged 5–12
  • Maintain editorial consistency in tone, language, and values across all content.
Content Commissioning, Editing & Proofreading
  • Commission, review, edit, and rewrite content from writers and contributors.
  • Ensure grammatical accuracy, factual correctness, cultural sensitivity, and readability.
  • Deliver print-ready, error‑free pages at final proof stage.
Contributor, Team & Stakeholder Coordination
  • Manage coordination with writers, illustrators, translators, designers, and production teams.
  • Mentor Assistant Editors and review their output.
  • Track timelines, revisions, and approvals independently.
Design, Layout & Print Coordination
  • Work closely with designers on page layouts, visuals, and illustrations.
  • Ensure correct pagination, captions, credits, and visual balance.
  • Review and approve final layouts before sending them to press.
Language & Multi-Edition Support
  • Coordinate with language teams for translations and adaptations.
  • Review adapted content to ensure consistency across editions and formats.
Reader Engagement
  • Oversee reader interaction pages such as letters, drawings, contests, and feedback.
  • Shortlist and edit reader submissions for publication.
Editorial Projects & Special Assignments
  • Work on special issues, compilations, activity books, supplements, and one‑off editorial projects.
  • Support editorial initiatives linked to schools, events, partnerships, or campaigns.
  • Collaborate on cross‑department editorial projects involving marketing, digital, or educational outreach.
  • Contribute to process improvement, content audits, and editorial documentation where required.
Production & Deadline Accountability
  • Own editorial timelines and ensure zero delays from the editorial side.
  • Proactively flag and resolve risks impacting print schedules.
  • Support the Editorial Head in managing workflows and last‑minute corrections
Qualifications & Skills
  • Master’s degree in English Literature, Journalism, Mass Communication, or Social Sciences.
  • 6–8+ years of editorial experience, with proven ownership of print magazine workflows.
  • Excellent command of English; working knowledge of Hindi (regional languages are a plus).
  • Strong copy‑editing, proofreading, and content structuring skills.
  • Solid understanding of print production and pre‑press processes.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects alongside monthly print cycles.
  • Proficiency in InDesign, MS Office, and Google Workspace tools.
Preferred Candidate Profile
  • Has independently handled print issues from start to finish.
  • Comfortable juggling monthly magazines and parallel editorial projects.
  • Highly organized, detail‑oriented, and solution‑driven.
  • Strong mentoring and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience in children’s publishing is highly desirable.
