Overview

Assistant Professor of Global Social Justice, Faculty of Humanities

McMaster University invites applications for a two-year (renewable), contractually limited appointment as Assistant Professor of Global Social Justice to teach in the Global Peace and Social Justice program. The appointment will begin on January 1, 2026 and the successful candidate will be expected to teach 6-7 one-term courses per academic year.

Responsibilities
  • The successful applicant must hold a doctorate in a Humanities or cognate discipline. We seek applicants with a strong interdisciplinary teaching and research agenda to teach core courses in the program.
  • Teach GPSJ program courses and courses in the Gender and Social Justice undergraduate program, with opportunities for graduate-level teaching and supervision. Some courses that may be taught include, “Peace, Justice, and Human Rights”; “Human Rights and Social Justice”; “Creating Social Change”; and special topics.
  • Lead the online course development of a Level 1 course and assist with student engagement efforts, including outreach, recruitment and public communication.
  • Engage in service contributions as part of the role, working with the program director to provide academic leadership and service to the program; contribute to program-building and community engagement as a core part of the professional role.
  • Support major events such as the Gandhi Lecture on Nonviolence and Gandhi Peace Festival hosted every Fall.
  • Demonstrate willingness and ability to support the university-wide goals of equity, diversity and inclusivity.
Qualifications
  • PhD in a Humanities or cognate discipline.
  • Strong interdisciplinary teaching and research agenda focused on Global Peace and Social Justice, with preferred areas including peace studies, human rights, global social justice, South Asian studies and community-engaged research and praxis.
  • Interest in Mahatma Gandhi and principles of nonviolence or protest movements is strongly encouraged.
  • Instructional design knowledge and skills to lead online course development are assets.
  • Willingness to teach in the GPSJ program and Gender and Social Justice undergraduate program, with opportunities for graduate-level teaching and supervision.
  • Ability to contribute to equity, diversity and inclusivity initiatives within the university.
