Job description
Overview

Tomlinson is Eastern Canada’s leader in environmental, construction and transportation infrastructure services. The Asphalt Superintendent is responsible for the management of the asphalt, grinding and manhole adjustment crews in Tomlinson’s day to day operations. The incumbent will work daily with Operations Managers, Project Managers and Project Superintendents to maximize scheduling and efficiency of all the paving, adjustment and grinding crews. They will be responsible to develop and improve existing processes such as scheduling and dispatching to ensure optimum crew utilization while maintaining a high level of quality control.

Location: Kingston region & Eastern Ontario

Primary Responsibilities
  • Manage, train and mentor asphalt paving crews, adjustment crews and grinding crews
  • Seek out and engage with clients to actively pursue business opportunities in the Eastern Ontario regions
  • Develop and implement work processes with foremen and crews utilizing the resources within Tomlinson
  • Coordinate operations with the Quality Control Department and Asphalt Plants
  • Assist with the coordination meetings to review the asphalt demands and maximize efficiencies in production, clients, plant limitations, liquid A / C suppliers etc.
  • Communicate scheduling needs with asphalt plants, scales, quarries and QC department
  • Ensure all CoR and Health and Safety requirements are being adhered to daily
  • Ensure driver compliance with all paving and iron crew CVOR vehicles
  • Ensure crews have proper job information, utility locates, mix types, production rates, trucking information etc.
  • Actively review new technology to develop efficiencies
  • Develop cross training among crews
  • Track project productions and report productivity to project managers
  • Coordinate with the trucking department, to maximize trucking efficiency and capacity
  • Review jobsites prior to organizing crew movements to verify jobsite limitations and conditions
  • Responsible for scheduling crews for weekend and night work when required
  • Coordinate the efficient usage of Material Transfer Vehicles
  • Manage the various paving equipment storage and repairs
  • Attend owner and client pre-construction meetings to represent the asphalt portion of contracts
  • Ensure that we are meeting or exceeding our client’s expectations
  • Assist with allocating worker vacation time while maintaining project demands
  • Coordinate with our maintenance facilities for the repairs and maintenance of the equipment
  • Coordinate with our tack coat supplier and distributors
  • Work hand in hand with our quality department to resolve issues
  • Provide valuable insight to estimators during tendering

Education and Experience
  • 5+ years of experience as the foreman of a main line paving crew in addition to 3+ years of experience as a lead hand or tail ender
  • Ability to continually promote mentoring and crew cross training
  • Strong working knowledge of Book 7 Traffic Control
  • Good interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to handle simultaneous projects to meet tight deadlines
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Computer knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Knowledge of SAP; Hard Dollar would be an asset
