Job summary

A leading healthcare provider in Nova Scotia seeks an Anaesthetic Practitioner for the Day Surgery Unit. The successful candidate will provide anaesthetic assistance, care for postoperative patients, and participate in departmental audits. Required qualifications include current NMC registration and completion of relevant competencies. Candidates will engage in multi-site working as needed. Job description

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non‑clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.

Shift Pattern

Monday‑Friday, 37 hours per week.

Role Overview

The Day Surgery Unit (DSU) in the New Victoria Hospital (NVH) requires an Anaesthetic Practitioner (AP) who must be either an Operating Department Assistant (ODP) or a Registered General Nurse (RGN) who has successfully completed the NHS Education for Scotland (NES) Core Competencies for Anaesthetic Assistants Portfolio.

The DSU consists of 8 theatres, a Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU), a treatment room and a 23‑hour stay ward. The theatre sessions cover specialties including orthopaedics, urology, ENT, ophthalmology, maxilla‑facial, gynaecology and a pain service.

Responsibilities
  • Provide skilled anaesthetic assistance to anaesthetists.
  • Care for postoperative patients in the PACU.
  • Participate in the resuscitation rota for NVH.
  • Support the Senior Charge Nurse and assume responsibility in their absence.
  • Compile staff rotas, input SSTS data, review TURAS and Datix submissions.
  • Participate in departmental audits and implement theatre processes.
  • Order and manage stock for clinical procedures via Pecos and maintain medication stock levels.
  • Organise servicing of anaesthetic equipment to ensure ongoing service provision.
  • Contribute to teaching and training and encourage ongoing staff development.
  • Maintain communication between staff, management, other departments and multidisciplinary team members, safeguarding GDPR compliance.
  • Engage in multi‑site working within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde as required.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Live NMC UK pin.
  • Current NMC registration.
  • Operating Department Assistant (ODP) or Registered General Nurse (RGN) with NES Core Competencies for Anaesthetic Assistants.
  • PVG Scheme membership/Disclosure Scotland Check.
  • Immediate Life Support (ILS) certificate is advantageous; training can be provided.
  • Knowledge across a wide range of theatre specialties.
Additional Information

As per NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s pre‑employment checks, candidates must provide evidence of current NMC/HCPC registration prior to the start date. Effective 1 April 2026, the full‑time working hours for all Agenda for Change posts will be reduced to 36 hours.
