POSITION SUMMARY
The role refines and executes the sourcing and procurement strategies for consumables, services, semi‑finished products, and finished products essential to the operations and competitiveness of the organization.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership
- Manage the day‑to‑day workloads of the Procurement team for our Canadian facilities (Calgary and Richmond), including coordinating staff and ensuring all activities in the procurement team are completed on time.
- Coach team on and implement procurement best practices.
- Track and monitor key performance indicators to ensure alignment with and achievement of team and organizational objectives.
- Provide coaching and mentoring for the team, to support team members’ development and career growth.
Sourcing and Procurement
- Develop and evolve sourcing and procurement strategies, lead sourcing and procurement initiatives, and manage sourcing and procurement activities.
- Research and identify new suppliers, facilitate technical specification discussions, conduct commercial discussions and negotiations, and arrange and monitor trials. This will be to ensure cost competitiveness and, to ensure 100% supply security, the priority will be on critical items with currently limited alternatives.
- When required, work with freight forwarders or break‑bulk ship brokers to coordinate cost‑effective and timely shipment of goods from supplier to destination.
- Work with the Planning and Scheduling team and the Sales team to plan sourcing and procurement activities for work‑in‑progress items and finished products.
- Act as the conduit between supplier and key business stakeholders, to rectify issues and implement improvements.
- Negotiate with and manage suppliers, to ensure the competitiveness and effectiveness of the manufacturing operations and the competitiveness and quality of our product offerings.
- Maintain knowledge of market trends and, when available, indicators on critical items.
- Track and report on the impact of sourcing and procurement initiatives and activities. This will include conducting spend analysis using Excel and the emphasis will be on decreasing the total cost of ownership of the procured inputs and products.
- Support the organization’s efforts to mitigate the impact of US and Canadian Tariffs, Surtaxes, and duties. Typical responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- maintaining up‑to‑date knowledge on current tariffs, surtaxes, and duties, as it relates to the products that Tree Island sells into the US
- developing a sourcing and procurement strategy for raw materials, work‑in‑progress, consumables, and finished wire products that Tree Island buys and imports into Canada/US.
- Ensuring ongoing compliance with US Customs and Border Protection and Canadian Border Services Agency rules and regulations.
- Monitor, research, and communicate trade developments to senior management and key business stakeholders.
- Execute initiatives to benefit from or mitigate impact of trade developments. This may include working with trade lawyers and government affairs organizations, to lobby the government or obtain exclusions/exemptions. This may also include working with economic development organizations, to obtain funding or grants.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of strategic sourcing/procurement experience
- Experience leading a high‑performing procurement team
- Experience with onboarding and managing international vendors
- Experience with ocean container shipping. Break‑bulk shipping experience is a bonus
- Proven track record of identifying opportunities for and delivering cost savings
- Ability to make data‑driven decisions
- Strong verbal and written communication skills as appropriate for the needs of varied audiences
- Must be able to lead cross‑functional initiatives and establish clear goals and accountabilities to ensure successful delivery
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and critical thinking skills
- Knowledge and/or experience in the steel industry or manufacturing preferred
- Ability to travel into the US and internationally
- Certified Supply Chain Management Professional (CSCMP) or Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) an asset
- Open‑minded, charismatic, and energetic
- Collaborative and team‑oriented, but able to work individually with minimal supervision when required
