A full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate Position will soon be available in the Laboratory of Dr. Sayan Nandi (PI), Howard University, Washington DC. The laboratory (funded by NIH and private foundation grants) is focused on understanding the contributions of microglial cells, the brain-resident macrophages (the principal immune cell type of the brain), toward various brain disorders. Thus, the work focus of the laboratory is at the interface of neuroscience and immunology. The laboratory integrates mouse genetic studies and cell culture model systems, to study the role of microglia, in the contexts of developmental and neuropsychiatric disorders (such as autism, schizophrenia), neurodegenerative diseases (such as Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia), and neural injury (such as stroke, TBI).

Microglia are the first amongst all macrophages to appear during early embryonic development. Recent studies have placed microglia in the landscape of sculpting and refining neural circuits due to their ability to modify synapses in live neurons, a phenomenon that has strong implications in neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases. These immune cells are also amongst the first responders following a neural injury. The laboratory undertakes multidisciplinary approaches such as biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, genomics, high-resolution imaging, neurophysiology, surgical, and behavioral studies. More information on Dr. Nandi’s research is available on: https://profiles.howard.edu/sayan-nandi https://www.nandilab.org

SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:

The candidate is expected to have training in rodent procedures including but not limited to –stereotaxic methods (surgical), imaging, and behavioral studies. The candidate is also expected to work collaboratively with the faculty in the Department of Anatomy, College of Medicine, as well as outside the Department, as required. The candidate should be able to effectively communicate with the PI. This position requires in-depth understanding of brain function and scientific literature, extensive data analysis and interpretation, as well as skills required for scientific presentation. The candidate is expected to be involved in the training of incoming students and postdoctoral fellows in the PI’s laboratory.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

The candidate will have the opportunity to learn various models and relevant techniques in Neuroscience applicable to stroke and neurodegenerative diseases research, write competitive fellowship and grant applications and chalk out a pathway to independence. Internal and external contacts with a variety of researchers and faculty are anticipated.
