We are hiring an Engineering Manager to lead a team working closely with Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and other cloud partners to optimize Ubuntu for their infrastructure. The team builds, tests, and publishes Ubuntu images used by millions, ensuring performance and security in cloud environments. The goal is to deliver excellent cloud VM experiences and specialized images for various purposes, celebrating and enabling cloud providers' unique features while maintaining a consistent user experience.

As an engineering manager, you will bring technical expertise and leadership skills. You will also represent your team in partner engagements, ensuring stability and functionality for cloud users. Your responsibilities include automating image delivery for diverse workloads, from web servers to GPU-accelerated AI, across servers, VMs, and containers.

Your primary responsibilities as a manager include supporting your team’s growth, ensuring valuable work, and fostering a positive environment. You will challenge and develop your engineers, influence company culture, and collaborate on strategy and delivery.

The role involves working primarily in Python and Golang. You are expected to be fluent in these languages, architecture, and components your team builds. Code reviews, architectural leadership, documentation, quality assurance, performance optimization, fair management, and maintaining a high-performing team are key technical and managerial responsibilities.

The role entails:

  1. Building and leading a team of engineers across similar time zones
  2. Developing talent through coaching and mentorship
  3. Applying sound engineering principles and contributing to team goals
  4. Managing expectations with other teams, management, and stakeholders
  5. Leading modern, agile development practices
  6. Fostering a healthy, collaborative engineering culture
  7. Participating in leadership and strategic planning
  8. Building reliable automation pipelines for image delivery
  9. Engaging with internal teams, open source community, and partners
  10. Working remotely with up to 15% travel for events

We seek candidates who:

  • Enjoy mentoring and developing engineers
  • Are passionate about software development
  • Focus on delivering high-quality, timely software
  • Have experience with agile methodologies
  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science or STEM
  • Have development experience in Python or Golang
  • Possess effective communication skills
  • Have practical experience with cloud platforms like AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure
