Job summary

A consulting and engineering firm is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer in Sharjah, UAE. This full-time role requires at least 10 years of relevant oil & gas project experience, including leadership skills and proficiency in project management. The candidate shall oversee engineering tasks, contribute technical expertise, and guide team members. The ideal applicant will have a B.Sc. in Engineering, demonstrating flexibility and creativity to solve complex engineering problems while maintaining safety standards.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Wood is recruiting for a Senior Mechanical Engineer (Static) to join our UAE Business Unit. This is a full‑time office‑based role in Sharjah, UAE with business trips.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Contributing to technical delivery of engineering excellence through:

  • Executing assigned scopes of work
  • Providing discipline expertise to the business
  • Supporting and supervising task delegation to team
  • Uses technical knowledge to perform engineering assignments and produce engineering deliverables including complex problems. Completes almost any engineering tasks with minimal guidance and direction. May serve as the primary discipline engineer or discipline technical authority on projects with small to medium complexity.
  • Performs engineering assignments, usually representing a significant portion of a larger project. Selects engineering techniques to solve problems and makes design recommendations
  • Requires mature professional knowledge in planning and conducting assignments having scope for coordination of difficult tasks.
  • Applies specific area(s) of expertise in own discipline area
  • In consultancy businesses, may review and manage complex projects within area of expertise or of a multidisciplinary nature

Key Accountabilities & responsibilities:

Executing Assigned Scopes of Work
  • Participates as a team member in a specific phase of a broad engineering assignment
  • Directs preparation of appropriate documentation for assigned projects
  • Ensures successful completion of the assigned project/phase within the budgeted time and cost constraints
  • Participates in defining engineering approaches, and in planning and scheduling work
  • Evaluates problems, organizes investigations and establishes general performance specifications for components, equipment, systems, processes, etc.
  • Check engineering calculations and check all drawings in accordance with industry codes and standards; assist with the development of less senior Technical Professionals
  • Adhere to and comply with relevant discipline specific procedures and provide feedback for continuous improvement
  • Participate in audits and incident investigations as required
  • Performs complex engineering tasks related to specific units of major projects
  • Participate in site visits, project review meetings, design reviews and other workshops as required
  • Organising and active participation in design reviews
Providing Discipline Expertise
  • Solves problems requiring development of new approaches or new uses for existing approaches; exercises mature professional judgment in evaluating and selecting technical strategic options.
  • As necessary, modifies established guidelines, devises new approaches, applies existing criteria in new ways and draws conclusions from comparative situations.
  • Regularly functions as a technical leader or significant contributor to a major complex problem or project.
  • Produces innovative ideas and solves problems requiring development of new approaches or new uses for existing approaches.

  • Provides technical input and support to proposals as required.
Supporting and Supervising Task Delegation to Team
  • May supervise a small work group consisting of technical/professional staff with some coaching from own supervisor, or may provide advice and guidance in area of specialization to others.
  • Assist in performing managerial tasks as requested, such as assigning tasks to engineers; planning and coordinating portions of the engineering work; preparing scopes, schedules, and budgets; attending project meetings; and developing lesser‑experienced technical professionals.
  • Discusses with other senior engineers to agree priorities and implications on work of others.
  • Approves work schedules and makes recommendations for increased resources and special equipment.
  • Makes commitments on acceptance of projects, completion dates, resources and staff required to meet goals.
  • Coordinates the activities of engineering and design groups assigned to small projects.
  • Participates in developing deadlines, projects and work to be done.
  • May manage one or more small projects, with responsibility for cost, schedule, resources allocation and risk.
  • Provides appropriate HSSE leadership including compliance with site and office safety requirements and technical/design safety requirements.

  • Develops productive, collaborative relationships of trust within and across projects, offices and regions, as well as with functions.
  • Engages with inter‑discipline community and promotes discipline including networking / knowledge sharing.

  • No direct reports but frequently serves as a technical resource.
  • May be required to supervise teams and provide technical guidance to drafters / designers and technical professionals with some coaching from own supervisor.

Expected
  • B.Sc. or equivalent degree in the Engineering discipline from an accredited university.
  • Minimum of 10+ years relevant experience in major Brownfield oil & gas projects, including at least five (5) years in a similar position.
Knowledge, skills and experience
  • Specific experience in Oil and Gas projects across their lifecycle in the GCC region, preferred.
  • Pre‑FEED, FEED experience is required.
  • Detailed Engineering experience is preferred.
