Overview

Bariatric Coordinator

The Bariatric Coordinator functions in the role of expert clinician and resource in the area of specialty to which they are assigned. In collaboration with the medical staff and nursing staff, the Bariatric Coordinator monitors the clinical care of patients and provides clinical support to improve patient care and patient outcomes. The role of Bariatric Coordinator is built on increased autonomy of practice, supported by in-depth nursing knowledge, clinical expertise and application of the best available evidence or current research.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Ensure an individualized plan of care, with daily goals, are agreed upon and physician orders are carried out specific to the needs of the bariatric patient
  • Through involvement in clinical consultation and direct patient care, assesses and improves the patient care process for the bariatric patient population along the continuum of care
  • Collaborates with other healthcare professionals to ensure that evidence-based practice is implemented through continuous dialogue with bedside caregivers
  • Encourages and challenges bedside RNs to use critical thinking when applying the nursing process to their clinical care
  • Participates (or leads), daily bedside multidisciplinary rounds on assigned bariatric patients
  • Uses effective communication skills with patients and staff; demonstrates proper telephone techniques and etiquette
  • Shows sensitivity to differences of culture; demonstrates a positive and supportive manner in which patients / families/ colleagues perceive interactions as positive and supportive
  • Review discharge instructions with patients and their families
  • Arrange outpatient follow up appointments after discharge
  • Call patients within 3 days after discharge for phone follow up
  • Facilitates the movement of the patient and family through the bariatric surgery process by providing them with individualized education, support, and coordination of service
  • Will provide direct care to short and long term bariatric patients with multiple, often complicated acute and chronic medical problems and continuity of care
  • Acts as an advocate on behalf of the patient to protect the patient’s health, safety and rights
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies and procedures related to Protected Health Information (PHI) or other sensitive and personal information
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to safety and infection control policies and procedures
  • Assumes accountability for improving quality metrics associated with department/unit and meeting organizational/departmental targets
  • Provides consultation and collaborates with physicians, nurses and other health care team members to develop a comprehensive and coordinated plan of care work in collaboration with physician colleagues to ensure that nursing assessment and physician’s problem list and plan are discussed among the multidisciplinary team
  • Develop, implement and evaluate comprehensive patient education programs
  • Participate in the development and execution of quality assurance programs and projects
  • Assure that the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi Bariatric Program remains in compliance with the Department of Health Abu Dhabi, Federal Government and international standards

QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education -ESSENTIAL: Bachelors degree in Nursing or related field from an accredited college or university or equivalent combination of experience and education

  • PREFERRED A Master’s degree in Nursing or relevant area may be used to substitute for one (1) year of clinical experience
  • Certificate of post graduate diploma in bariatric

Experience:

  • Two (2) years of clinical nursing experience
  • Progressive Nursing experience with demonstrated success
  • Two (2) years of bariatric or closely related nursing experience

Certification and Licensure

  • Valid and current national license is required
  • BLS is required from AHA or an equivalent organization, or must be obtained within three (3) months of employment
