Job summary

A leading medical institution in Singapore is seeking a Laboratory Assistant to ensure quality specimen collection, including blood, urine, and stool samples for investigations. The ideal candidate should have at least GCE 'O' Level and preferably a Phlebotomist Certificate. Responsibilities include verifying patient identifiers, preparing the treatment room, and adhering to hospital policies regarding patient safety and performance. Experience in drawing blood specimens is preferred, and good interpersonal skills are a must.

Qualifications

  • 1 year of experience in drawing blood specimen is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Collects blood, urine, stool, and other lab samples.

  • Checks daily laboratory reconciliation and rectifies errors.

  • Responsible for obtaining quality blood, urine and stool samples for laboratory investigations in Specialist Outpatient Clinic.
  • Ensures the specimen is collected from the correct patient using the correct tube type, label the request forms and samples correctly, and dispatch the samples to the laboratory in a timely manner.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
SPECIFIC
  • Collects blood, urine, stool sample and any other lab samples.
  • Checking and printing of orders from the NGEMR System and Electronic Collection Module (ECM)
  • Prepares treatment room to be in optimal condition before and after clinic operating hours.
  • Be knowledgeable in what type of tubes to use for the different tests, the order of blood collection, the amount required, inverting and how to prevent specimen clotting.
  • Ensures that specimens are collected from the correct patients by verifying with two patient identifiers, using the correct tube type, request forms; specimens are labelled correctly and dispatch to the laboratory in a timely manner
  • Checks Laboratory reconciliation daily and rectify errors like missing specimens as necessary.
  • Respects and protects patients’ rights and confidentiality.
GENERAL
  • Adheres to hospital and laboratory policies concerning dress codes, professional conduct, attendance, punctuality, documentation, performance criteria and other directives as issued.
  • Demonstrates good interpersonal skills with the public and staff.
  • Performs competency in the relevant skills as defined and exercise cost effectiveness in the use of resources.
  • Performs good clinical practices according to the Hospital Standards.
  • Adheres to patient safety and Infection Control Practices according to the Hospital Standards.
  • Assists to receive and check stock items, update the inventory system and raise requests to replenish stocks.
  • Participates in quality improvement projects and continuing education programs.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

  • Reports unusual occurrences and unsafe practices/events in accordance to the hospital quality standard.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION
  • Minimum GCE ‘O’ Level and above.
  • Preferably with Phlebotomist Certificate training or certified in venipuncture.
EXPERIENCE
  • Preferably with 1 year experience in drawing blood specimen.
