The Opportunity :

Are you an expert in marine insurance, ready to take the lead in underwriting complex risks and driving portfolio growth? Join our team as a Senior Underwriter, Marine. Be part of a global insurance leader committed to innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

You will independently analyse and underwrite new and renewal marine business including Cargo, Cargo Liability, Marine Liability and Fine Art and Specie, while engaging with the market and delivering exceptional customer service. This role involves significant market interaction, portfolio management, and technical leadership, utilising The Zurich Way of Underwriting Framework to ensure high‑level service and profitable growth. You will be providing guidance to junior underwriters and partnering closely with Distribution, Claims, Risk Engineering, and Actuarial to deliver superior customer outcomes.

Key Job Accountabilities
  • Independently assess, price, and negotiate terms and conditions for complex marine risks, ensuring alignment with established Underwriting Guidelines and delegated authority.
  • Manage a diverse portfolio of marine accounts, ensuring all activities comply with company standards, regulatory requirements, and support broader business strategies.
  • Lead and mentor junior underwriters, providing technical guidance and supporting their development.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers, clients, and key stakeholders, acting as the primary point of contact for major accounts.
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities and renewal prospects, leveraging market research and industry insights to drive profitable growth.
  • Represent the company in market‑facing activities, including client meetings, broker presentations, and industry events.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (Claims, Risk Engineering, Actuarial) to deliver comprehensive solutions and maintain Zurich’s competitive edge.
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation, system updates, and compliance with audit and file quality standards.
  • Monitor industry trends, emerging risks, and regulatory changes, proactively adapting underwriting strategies as needed.
  • Contribute to product development, process improvements, and strategic projects within the Marine line of business.
Qualifications, Experience & Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) and professional insurance qualifications (e.g., ACII, ANZIIF, CPCU) preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in underwriting or broking marine risks, with a proven track record in managing complex portfolios and client relationships.
  • Deep technical knowledge of marine insurance products, wordings, and market practices.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and decision‑making abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to influence and negotiate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including guiding junior team members.
  • Proven ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and deliver results in a dynamic market environment.
  • Business development acumen and established connections with brokers and marine industry partners.
