Overview
The Membership Growth Architect will serve as a key resource for Scouting America councils, the Membership Engagement department, and the Council Operations department, reporting directly to the Vice President of Membership Engagement.
In this role, you will design and implement a scalable growth framework—adapted from proven models such as EOS, Scaling Up, and others—tailored for nonprofit and volunteer-led environments. This framework will equip councils, the Membership Engagement team, and Council Support Teams (CSTs) with the clarity, playbooks, and processes needed to drive membership growth and retention.
Working collaboratively with council executives, key volunteers, department leaders, and staff, the Membership Growth Architect will:
- Partner with councils nationwide to apply the organizational growth framework.
- Align vision, people, data, processes, and execution to achieve mission-driven growth outcomes.
- Provide structure, tools, and support that enable councils to meet and exceed membership goals.
The ideal candidate brings both a deep understanding of Scouting and expertise in organizational growth practices and ability and willingness to travel nationally up to 40% for on-site coaching with councils.
Responsibilities
- Facilitates growth framework implementation for assigned councils, adapting tools for nonprofit and volunteer environments.
- Guides council leadership teams and Council Service Territory Directors through a collaborative process to clarify impact goals and help develop 90-day priorities and systemized membership growth best practices.
- Helps build accountability charts that integrate staff and volunteer membership growth roles.
- Trains councils on data scorecards used to track growth-related KPIs (membership, units, retention, program engagement).
- Documents and streamlines key growth processes.
- Fosters a culture of collaboration, accountability, transparency, and problem-solving in councils and with all NSC teams that support member growth.
- Identifies performance gaps and provides targeted coaching/support to leaders and teams.
- Captures and shares best practices from high-performing councils.
- Provides feedback and recommendations to the organization to inform national membership strategies.
- Works with Scouting University in support of their training curriculum.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Competencies
- Knowledge of: Scouting programs, culture, and operational structures; growth frameworks and their application in nonprofit and volunteer-led organizations; council operations, process planning, and program performance management; franchise growth processes experience.
- Skill in: Facilitating strategic planning sessions and leadership team coaching; adapting growth framework tools for mission-driven, nonprofit contexts; building trust and rapport with senior leaders, boards, staff, and volunteers; and using data and scorecards to drive accountability and decision-making.
- Ability to: Lead without authority and support teams through organizational change with patience and discipline; translate complex concepts into practical, actionable steps; manage multiple council engagements while providing high-quality support; and maintain confidentiality and neutrality in coaching relationships.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in business, nonprofit management, organizational leadership, or related field.
Qualifications
- Minimum 8 years of process mapping and sales/growth leadership, facilitation, or growth coaching experience to include experience leading strategic planning, performance coaching, and operational alignment initiatives.
- Must have a proven track record as a business or organizational growth expert, ideally with nonprofit or youth-serving organizations.
- Franchise growth process experience a plus.
Licenses
- Process Mapping, Sales, Coaching or facilitation certification (ICF, PCC, EOS or similar) a plus.

Preference
- Prior Scouting America council leadership or national role experience.
- Demonstrated success coaching multi-stakeholder teams in complex, mission-driven environments.
- Strong public speaking, facilitation, and conflict resolution skills.
