A leading cruise company in Genova is seeking a Shore Connection Specialist responsible for planning and budgeting shore connection retrofits. This role involves liaising with various stakeholders to ensure system compatibility and safety. Candidates should hold a relevant degree and have experience in electrical engineering, particularly with high voltage systems. Strong problem-solving skills and fluent English and Italian are essential. Travel is required worldwide.

Competenze

  • At least three years of relevant working experience or five years as onboard 1st ETO / Chief Electrician on Cruise ships.
  • Advanced understanding of electrical skills including load sharing and high voltage systems.
  • Excellent knowledge of IEC, IEEE, API, IMO MODU, SOLAS standards.

Your Purpose

Due to the growth of the fleet and ports of call, MSC is looking for a dedicated Shore connection specialist who will be responsible for planning, directing, coordinating and budgeting shore connection retrofits, commissioning and use throughout the contemporary fleet.

You will liaise with all the stakeholders (contractors, shipyards, vessels crew, vessels Superintendents, ports authorities, shore operators, class societies, Port Operations and legal department) to ensure compatibility of the systems and coordination of the maintenance, safety tests and load transfers. In addition, you will provide support to the electrical team with other duties (obsolescence management, purchasing, logistics, etc..)

Your Impact
  • Reviews and completes a compatibility study prior to a new call. Assesses shoreside electrical facilities and protection settings, ensures compatibility with the vessels and compliance with the appropriate standards.
  • Manages the budgets for retrofits expenses and maintenance costs.
  • Manages any issues and keeps up-to-date step-by-step connection procedures, LOTO permits, risk assessments, maintenance charts.
  • Ensures that the maintenance of the shore connection-related equipment is performed as per the manufacturers’ recommendations.
  • Plans ahead and keeps tracks of the connection calls throughout the year (successful calls, commissioning calls, first calls, consumption, duration, reasons for cancellation, etc..).
  • Analyses, reviews and approves contracts, technical specifications and drawings for shore connection retrofits. Participates to the commissioning of the system onboard.
  • Conducts troubleshooting with assistance of ship staff, equipment makers and shore operators whenever an issue arises to find corrective actions and foresees their implementation on the fleet.
  • Works together with the electrical superintendents of the vessels for approving ship’s requests, dealing with obsolescence management, issuing boarding passes and accommodation requests.
Your Journey so far
  • Bachelor's Degree / Diploma in Electrical Engineering or similar;
  • At least three years of relevant working experience, or at least five (5) years working as onboard 1st ETO / Chief Electrician on Cruise ships with shore connection experience.
  • Advanced understanding of a combination of electrical skills, required to fulfil this role completely, e.g. Load sharing, synchronization process, AVR control, protection relay settings, safeties inherent to shore power, high Voltage (11.0 kV and 6.6 kV), Low Voltage (690v down to 12Vdc), harmonics;
  • Expertise in; High voltage generators, high voltage generator voltage controls, engine PID, High / low voltage switchgear and distribution switchboards, high voltage circuit breakers and protective devices, PLC, Integrated Automation System, Power Management System.
Your Essentials
  • Can demonstrate a strong understanding of high voltage safety;
  • Familiar with electrical engineering and installation standards including IEC, IEEE, API, IMO MODU, SOLAS, and class regulations (BV, RINA).
  • Straightforward problem solving and collaborative teamwork mindset.
  • Ability to manage deadlines, workload and priorities.
  • Able to travel worldwide onboard.
  • Excellent knowledge of the English and Italian language skills. Additional languages are beneficial;
