Overview

The purpose of this role is to strategically manage and develop a profitable portfolio of Construction risks in Europe in alignment with the business plan. This involves providing leadership in product strategy, pricing, and portfolio management, while ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. The role also includes driving profitable growth, managing resources effectively, and overseeing the country’s and Europe P&L for the Construction business lines within the organisation.

We are extending opportunities to grow our Construction practice across Europe, with existing coverage in France, Spain and the Netherlands and plans to expand to all European offices. This role will actively shape and support growth of the Construction book. The European Construction Product Leader can be based in any European office or London.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and execute Construction underwriting strategy across Europe and ensure delivery of the Construction annual business plan in alignment with Europe and EO Construction strategy.
  • Responsible for the Construction P&L across Europe, driving, shaping, and remediating the Construction portfolio as required.
  • Ensure teams are aware of the strategic direction of the Construction portfolio to achieve business objectives.
  • Recommend, implement, and manage the resources needed to deliver the Construction plan effectively.
Portfolio management, performance and reporting
  • Develop the Construction portfolio in line with plan, risk appetite and European / EO Underwriting strategy across Europe.
  • Oversee the review and analysis of the Construction portfolio. Monitor and report on progress against the business plan, identify deviations, and implement remedial action to achieve objectives.
Technical expertise
  • Act as technical Construction leader for Europe and first point of referral for cases exceeding Portfolio Manager authority, escalating to the EO Construction Leader as appropriate.
  • Refer to Director of Underwriting and Portfolio Management – Europe for input into commercially based decisions only.
  • Agree and communicate Risk appetites with EO Products Leads and ensure portfolio teams operate within those limits, and establish aggregate limits to govern activity within the Construction line.
  • Work with country P&L owners to ensure sound underwriting decisions and progress toward business plan objectives.
  • Contribute to aggregate management and peer review processes to develop excellence and understanding of market dynamics to drive performance.
Reinsurance
  • Understand and comply with reinsurance requirements to minimize risk and achieve business plan objectives.
  • Apply the Reinsurance strategy affecting portfolios.
  • Manage effective purchase of facultative reinsurance across Europe for Construction.
Compliance
  • Accountable for compliance of QBE EO’s underwriting framework for the Portfolios or business unit under their control, including :
  • Comply with all legal and regulatory requirements; adhere to underwriting standards and good practice; meet all reporting requirements.
  • Enable identification, measurement, and effective management of insurance risks; ensure compliance with QBE Underwriting Authority by all staff in the department.
Stakeholder Management
  • Establish and strengthen relationships with key internal stakeholders (CUO functions, business partners, reinsurers, colleagues) to maximize influence and achieve business outcomes.
  • Develop relationships with external stakeholders (customers, brokers, industry bodies) as appropriate for the product line; represent QBE’s interests with internal and external groups and participate in industry forums as needed.
People
  • Lead the UW Community for Construction across Europe.
  • Motivate and develop the team through strong leadership and best practice; continually develop product underwriting expertise and technical knowledge.
  • Provide direction and support to Country Underwriting Managers to align people with business needs; establish clear accountabilities and a culture of accountability.

  • Strong leadership skills to lead the UW Community.
  • Experience delivering strategic and change insurance solutions requiring broad technical expertise.
  • Ability to operate in a matrix environment with active listening and influencing skills; strong relationship management at senior levels; strategic thinking and analytical skills.
