Job Summary

The Arizona Department of Corrections Rehabilitation & Reentry (ADCRR) is seeking a driven leader to join our team as Deputy Warden. Under the direction of the Complex Warden, the incumbent will serve as administrator of a unit within an institution. The ideal candidate will have experience in leading and developing diverse groups of staff, progressive administrative experience in managing inmate populations, monitoring and directing unit operations, security, and inmate programming, and be responsible for ensuring the unit applies modern correctional practices.

Job Duties
  • Directs and provides leadership and supervision of unit activities and subordinate staff
  • Develops, controls, and reviews unit budget and expenditure reports
  • Oversees the development and operation of work, education, and recreational programs for the inmates
  • Reviews and evaluates reports of unit operations and develops replies
  • Monitors and advises on complex and high-level matters throughout the institution
  • Oversees inmate management to include grievances, appeals, classification, discipline, transfers, etc.
  • Performs security and physical plant inspections and ensures compliance with ADC policies and health, safety and sanitation standards
  • Reviews and approves unit personnel actions including training, scheduling, performance evaluations, discipline, hiring and terminations
  • Conducts staff meetings
  • Attends training and/or meetings as required
  • Performs other duties appropriate to the assignment
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge of:

  • State and federal laws and regulations relating to Corrections, department policies and institutional directives, and personnel rules
  • Correctional management including security, personnel, maintenance, warehousing, food service, and fiscal areas
  • Inmate management methods
  • Organization and workings of State government agencies
  • Classification system and levels appropriate to all levels of security and inmates
  • Reporting practices

Skill in:

  • Written and verbal communications
  • Administrative, managerial, leadership, and supervisory techniques
  • Planning and projection of staff and inmate needs
  • Organization and time management
  • Researching, analyzing, and problem solving

Ability to:

  • Adhere to all Departmental rules, regulations, policies and procedures
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of correctional programs and divisional operations based on objective data

Selective Preference(s)
  • Previous experience as an Associate Deputy Warden
  • Administrative or Business management experience within the Department of Corrections and a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice/Corrections, Public Administration, Business Administration, or Sociology/Social Science
