Job description
Job Description

The Times and The Sunday Times represent a combined 400 years of covering news and providing comment and analysis on the UK and the world. We are authoritative, credible, responsible, trusted and a part of the nation’s cultural heritage.

Your role

The Times is seeking a Technology Business Reporter. This is an exciting opportunity for a self‑motivated and ambitious financial journalist to provide informed and engaging news stories, analysis and commentary on the technology sector for Times readers.

You will be as curious about the latest start‑up as Silicon Valley tech giants.

The successful candidate will have a strong interest in the subject, a track record of delivering exclusives, the ability to write with flair and to pitch strong ideas for all sections of the paper, across print and digital.

Apply with a covering letter and CV by November 30.

Day to day you will:
  • Bring in regular exclusives and maintain excellent contacts in technology and social media
  • Write in a distinctive and engaging way that meets the brief from the commissioning editor and to the required length
  • Be a self‑starter and pitch strong ideas for all sections across print and digital
  • Command respect and authority in your writing and communicate that knowledge effectively in print, digital, radio and television as a representative of The Times - especially our own internal stations
  • Able to write across all sections and platforms seamlessly with particular attention to digital
  • Have a strong knowledge of social media and an ability to use it to increase our readership
  • Regularly pitch and contribute to digital packages that increase engagement and support subscriber growth
  • Collaborate with production colleagues in design, pictures and sub‑editing on elements that enhance the stories you write
What we’re looking for from you:
  • Experience working as a writer for a national newspaper or magazine
  • Demonstrable interest in technology
  • Strong contacts in technology and a proven ability to bring in exclusive stories
  • Experience in digital and a commitment to growing our digital audience
  • Ability to work autonomously and to strict deadlines
  • Excellent presentation skills and ability to communicate succinctly and effectively
  • Experience of working collaboratively
  • A strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues
