Student Midwife – Registered Midwife Program

We are recruiting student midwives to become registered midwives with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The course is funded by NHS England, covering tuition fees and providing salary support at mid band 5 with no enhancements. You will learn to provide midwifery care in a variety of settings under direct supervision of a midwife practice supervisor and attend the University of Hertfordshire for theoretical teaching.

Responsibilities
  • Determine and provide programmes of care and support for women and their babies under direct supervision of midwives:
    • Are appropriate to the needs, contexts, culture and choices of the women, babies and their families.
    • Are made in partnership with the multidisciplinary team and women.
    • Are ethical.
    • Are based on best evidence and clinical judgement.
    • Involve other practitioners when this will improve health outcomes.
  • Care for and monitor women during the puerperium, offering evidence‑based advice and support on baby and self‑care (antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal).
  • Provide seamless care and interventions in partnership with women and other care providers during the antenatal period:
    • Are appropriate for women's assessed needs, context and culture.
    • Promote their continuing health and well‑being.
    • Are evidence‑based.
    • Are consistent with the management of risk.
    • Draw on the skills of others to optimise health outcomes and resource use.
  • Refer women to individuals with the requisite skills and experience at the earliest possible time, supported by accurate, legible and complete information including the reasoning behind the referral and the woman's needs and preferences.
  • Attend university theory and complete academic work.
  • Complete required statutory and e‑learning modules prior to joining the organisation.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Eligible to work in the United Kingdom or meet the criteria for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa route.
  • EU/EEA citizens without settlement status will require a visa to work in the UK.
  • Acceptance of personal data transfer from the Trust to other NHS organisations under the streamlining programme.
  • Completion of the trust’s electronic new‑starter forms and verification of identity and right‑to‑work documentation using TrustID.
  • Willingness to undertake the aforementioned DBS checks if the role involves regulated activities.
Benefits & Working Conditions
  • £17,000+ staff base and service network across multiple NHS trusts providing a wide range of clinical placements.
  • 21.5‑month full‑time BSc / Master of Midwifery (MMID) Shortened Programme commencing 6 January 2025 and concluding 28 August 2026.
  • Fixed‑term contract for the duration of the course with 50 practice weeks (30 hours clinical, 10 hours theory), 8 theory weeks at university, 2 weeks personal development, 9 reflection weeks and 10 weeks annual leave.
  • Salary support at mid band 5 and participation in the NHS funding and training scheme.
  • Legal compliance with Disclosure and Barring Service Codes of practice and the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.
