Job description

The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust isseeking a dedicated and skilled Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon to joinour dynamic and supportive team. There are 3 Consultant Breast Surgeons and 2Specialist Registrars, supported by 5 Clinical Nurse Specialists in breastcancer. There is a close working relationship with the Oncology and Geneticsdepartments at the Sheffield Teaching Hospital. The department offers fasttrack services, family history clinics and follow up/ oncoplastic clinics.

The whole range of breast surgicalprocedures are offered and are mostly undertaken as day surgery cases; frombenign, via (localised) WLE and Oncoplastic procedures to immediate breastreconstructions, with or without axillary surgery (including TAD). Localisationtechniques in the breast and axilla include, Magseed, Magtrace, radioisotopeand/or Blue Dye.

Implant based and LD reconstructions areoffered in house. Other autologous reconstructions are offered in collaborationwith Plastic surgeons at the Sheffield Teaching Hospital. Dedicated time hasbeen set aside for an Oncoplastic MDT and most Oncoplastic patients are closelymonitored in our dedicated wound clinic.

The department is supported by anoutstanding Breast Radiology department, which is also a hub for the NationalBreast Screening Programme in the region.

The unit participates in national andinternational clinical trials. We are recruiting to ATNEC, EndoNET and LOLIPOP.We plan to participate in the TADPOLE study.

Main duties of the job

This is a 10 PA job, although equal considerationwill be given to candidates wishing to work less than full time. There will bescheduled operating time with a minimum of three all day lists a month, aweekly cancer MDT, as well as a weekly dedicated Oncoplastic MDT. Clinicworkload includes fast track clinics, results clinic, follow up/ Oncoplasticclinics and possibly oncology follow up clinics.

The aim post is to replace a colleague. The post isideal for a consultant interested in delivering an outstanding patient centredservice to the local population. They are expected to actively participate inrecruitment to ongoing clinical trials and departmental development.

Candidates on the Specialist Register, or expectingto be within 6 months or candidates within 6 months of obtaining SpecialistRegistration via CESR are encouraged to apply.

The Department

There are 3 Consultant Breast Surgeons with 10 Consultant GI Surgeons together with Specialist Registrars, Core Surgical Trainees and Foundation Trainees. The department provides a wide range of in-patient and day case procedures and provides emergency and elective general surgery services as well as subspecialty services in Colorectal, Breast and Upper GI.

We provide services to a population of approximately 260,000, nestled in the Heart of South Yorkshire. Fast track services are provided three days a week. The weekly Breast Cancer MDT is attended either virtually or in person by an Oncologist from the Oncology Team from Western Park Hospital Sheffield. Our Oncologists support tumour downsizing using neoadjuvant systemic therapy (chemotherapy or endocrine therapy) to facilitate breast conservation.

The weekly Breast MDT is followed by a post biopsy and a post-surgery results clinic. Oncoplastic MDT with the surgical and nursing teams takes place on a weekly basis, for both pre and post-operative discussion of Oncoplastic and reconstructive cases. Post operatively, the more complex Oncoplastic/reconstructive surgical cases will be seen in our dedicated wound clinic for close follow up. Furthermore, patients undergoing surgery are seen in a pre-operative consent clinic slot to explore and confirm treatment plan.

More than 95% of procedures are undertaken as a day surgery case. We provide benign breast surgery, simple wide local excisions, a wide range of Oncoplastic procedures and mastectomies with or without immediate reconstruction. Reconstructive techniques offered in house are implant based and LD reconstruction. Other autologous reconstruction techniques are offered in close collaboration with the Sheffield Teaching Hospital Plastic Surgery department. We offer sentinel lymph node biopsy, targeted axillary dissection and axillary lymph node clearance. Localisation techniques in the breast and axilla include, Magseed, Magtrace, radioisotope and/or Blue Dye.

The unit participates in national and international clinical trials. We are recruiting to ATNEC, EndoNET and LOLIPOP. We plan to participate in the TADPOLE study.

We provide nurse-led family history clinics in collaboration with the Sheffield Childrens Hospital Clinical Genetics Department. With the help of the Genetics Department we have successfully implemented fast track genetic testing on the R208 pathway.

The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust is a screening hub for the National Breast Screening Programme in the region.

The Post

The aim of the post is to replace a colleague in a busy, thriving department delivering an outstanding patient centred service to the local population. The post is ideal for a passionate and committed consultant with excellent clinical and communication skills. It is a 10 PA post, although equal consideration will be given to candidates wishing to work less than full time.

Other Medical Staff

The departments work is supported by two SAS doctors who work in the breast team. We have both higher specialist training, core training posts and have a highly successful ACP training programme that support up to Core Trainee level rotas. The breast unit are looking to train an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) in breast, to participate in new patient and breast pain clinics and assist in theatre.

Other Support Staff

This post is supported by secretarial, office support and organisationally by a departmental Service Support Manager and Service Manager. There are 3 Clinical Nurse Specialists in breast cancer, a Macmillan Cancer Support worker and a metastatic Clinical Nurse Specialist in breast cancer, supported by a Healthcare Support Worker.

Acute Surgical Unit

The Acute Surgical Unit has bespoke assessment facilities aimed at maximising our Same Day Emergency Care pathways for surgical patients. A senior surgical assessor, separate to the on-call team, reviews patients on presentation. Patients with urgent breast related problems are assessed in the Acute Surgical Unit and will start antibiotic treatment if applicable. The Breast Surgical team aims to see them in the first available new patient clinic to assess and manage the patient.

This is a 10 PA job. There will be planned operating with a minimum of three all day lists per month, cancer MDT and a dedicated Oncoplastic MDT. Clinic workload includes fast track clinics, Results clinics and follow up/Oncoplastic clinics.

On-Call

There are no on call commitments for this role.

Education and Training

The successful candidates will have access to all resources currently available in the Trust. This will involve Library and Knowledge Services, e-learning resources, Clinical Skills Training programmes, simulation training and other opportunities.

Consultant mentorship is available for the successful candidate.

It is anticipated that the successful candidate will become both a clinical and educational supervisor.

The weekly Breast Cancer MDT is attended either virtually or in person by an Oncologist from the Oncology Team from Western Park Hospital Sheffield. Our Oncologists support tumour downsizing using neoadjuvant systemic therapy (chemotherapy or endocrine therapy) to facilitate breast conservation.

The weekly Breast MDT is followed by a post biopsy and a post-surgery results clinic. Oncoplastic MDT with the surgical and nursing teams takes place on a weekly basis, for both pre and post-operative discussion of Oncoplastic and reconstructive cases. Post operatively, the more complex Oncoplastic/reconstructive surgical cases will be seen in our dedicated wound clinic for close follow up. Furthermore, patients undergoing surgery are seen in a pre-operative consent clinic slot to explore and confirm treatment plan.

More than 95% of procedures are undertaken as a day surgery case. We provide benign breast surgery, simple wide local excisions, a wide range of Oncoplastic procedures and mastectomies with or without immediate reconstruction. Reconstructive techniques offered in house are implant based and LD reconstruction. Other autologous reconstruction techniques are offered in close collaboration with the Sheffield Teaching Hospital Plastic Surgery department. We offer sentinel lymph node biopsy, targeted axillary dissection and axillary lymph node clearance. Localisation techniques in the breast and axilla include, Magseed, Magtrace, radioisotope and/or Blue Dye.

The unit participates in national and international clinical trials. We are recruiting to ATNEC, EndoNET and LOLIPOP. We plan to participate in the TADPOLE study.

We provide nurse-led family history clinics in collaboration with the Sheffield Childrens Hospital Clinical Genetics Department. With the help of the Genetics Department we have successfully implemented fast track genetic testing on the R208 pathway.

The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust is a screening hub for the National Breast Screening Programme in the region.

The Post

The aim of the post is to replace a colleague in a busy, thriving department delivering an outstanding patient centred service to the local population. The post is ideal for a passionate and committed consultant with excellent clinical and communication skills. It is a 10 PA post, although equal consideration will be given to candidates wishing to work less than full time.

Other Medical Staff

The departments work is supported by two SAS doctors who work in the breast team. We have both higher specialist training, core training posts and have a highly successful ACP training programme that support up to Core Trainee level rotas. The breast unit are looking to train an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) in breast, to participate in new patient and breast pain clinics and assist in theatre.

Other Support Staff

This post is supported by secretarial, office support and organisationally by a departmental Service Support Manager and Service Manager. There are 3 Clinical Nurse Specialists in breast cancer, a Macmillan Cancer Support worker and a metastatic Clinical Nurse Specialist in breast cancer, supported by a Healthcare Support Worker.

Acute Surgical Unit

The Acute Surgical Unit has bespoke assessment facilities aimed at maximising our Same Day Emergency Care pathways for surgical patients. A senior surgical assessor, separate to the on-call team, reviews patients on presentation. Patients with urgent breast related problems are assessed in the Acute Surgical Unit and will start antibiotic treatment if applicable. The Breast Surgical team aims to see them in the first available new patient clinic to assess and manage the patient.

This is a 10 PA job. There will be planned operating with a minimum of three all day lists per month, cancer MDT and a dedicated Oncoplastic MDT. Clinic workload includes fast track clinics, Results clinics and follow up/Oncoplastic clinics.

On-Call

There are no on call commitments for this role.

Education and Training

The successful candidates will have access to all resources currently available in the Trust. This will involve Library and Knowledge Services, e-learning resources, Clinical Skills Training programmes, simulation training and other opportunities.

Consultant mentorship is available for the successful candidate.

It is anticipated that the successful candidate will become both a clinical and educational supervisor.
