Advanced Pharmacist – Specialist Surgical Care

Are you looking to develop your skills in expert clinical practice as an integral member of a multi-disciplinary team?

An opportunity has arisen to join our Surgical Pharmacy team, supporting our Specialist Surgical Care Collaborative with a focus on Trauma and Orthopaedics. The post holder acts as a key pharmacy contact for the directorate, supporting a range of clinical and operational projects and working as part of the senior pharmacist team to support the wider Surgical Collaboratives.

We are looking for someone with extensive clinical pharmacy skills and experience; excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strong team spirit, the confidence to act as an advanced clinical pharmacist and a role model for early‑career and trainee pharmacists.

This post is based at the Cumberland Infirmary site and will also involve cross‑site responsibilities and collaboration across the wider Trust to develop and deliver pharmacy services.

• Work closely with clinicians and nursing colleagues to promote safe and effective use of medicines and cost‑effective resource utilisation.
• Lead, deliver and develop pharmacy services for surgical directorates in line with national priorities and local objectives.
• Act as a pharmacist prescriber and develop the prescribing role in designated clinical areas.
• Support the development of early‑career and trainee pharmacists.
• Act as a senior member of the surgical pharmacy team, assisting with day‑to‑day operational duties as required.
• Act as line manager for designated band 6 or 7 pharmacists.
• Participate in regional and national network forums to advance clinical practice and share learning.
• Weekend working, bank holiday rota and on‑call duties are expected.

• Pharmacy degree (MA or equivalent)
• Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council
• Higher pharmacy professional/post‑graduate qualification
• Evidence of continuing professional development

• On the practicing register of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPS)
• Pharmacist prescribing qualification
• Teaching and assessing qualification

• Extensive specialist therapeutic and clinical knowledge relevant to the post and collaborative
• Expert knowledge of pharmacy/medicine standards, legal requirements and guidelines
• Understanding of current developments in pharmacy practice and NHS strategy/policy
• Knowledge of current and planned developments in the pharmacy profession
• Understanding of NHS managerial and financial frameworks

• Evidence of successful change management
• Understanding of ePACT and other prescribing data
• Knowledge of primary care prescribing and medicines management arrangements
• Extensive experience in a secondary care role

The post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and requires submission of a Disclosure and Barring Service check. The cost of DBS (Standard Check £27.40, Enhanced Check £55.40) will be deducted from salary over a 4‑month period or a one‑off payment.
