I’m currently recruiting for an experienced HGV Workshop Manager to join a large family‑run business and work alongside the Head of UK Fleet in the management of HGV vehicle maintenance.
Candidate
- Vast experience of managing HGV Workshops
- Previous HGV mechanical experience
- HGV and trailer workshop experience
- NVQ level 3 or above in HGV Mechanics (desirable)
- Minimum of 10 years management experience in a similar role – ideally in the road transport industry
- Well‑organised and a multitasker with an eye for detail and a good common sense approach to scheduling of work
- Strong commitment to compliance, health and safety and quality standards
- Stock room and spare parts management experience
- Strong proven leadership skills; ability to demonstrate team leadership, motivation, coaching and day‑to‑day management of staff including performance reviews and appraisals
- Ability to deliver on a business plan and its objectives, managing all resources and costs
- Experience of day‑to‑day reporting and accountability to senior management
- Positive, can‑do attitude and willingness to go the extra mile to get the job done correctly and on time
- Ability to work to deadlines with great attention to detail
- Excellent IT and computer skills – including Microsoft Office and other relevant software packages
Duties and Responsibilities
- Work closely with and report to the Garage Director; responsible for day‑to‑day operation of the business
- Manage the onsite team of assorted garage staff (mechanics, welders, auto electricians and refrigerated unit technicians)
- Handle people‑management duties: recruitment, selection, training, performance management and evaluate the quality of work undertaken
- Log, evaluate and assign all work to be undertaken; schedule the order in which work is carried out, ensuring complex jobs are assigned appropriately while quick repairs are expedited
- Maintain staffing levels in line with operational needs and financial goals
- Operate the facility in full compliance with health and safety and quality standards; schedule regular audits of all agreed standards
- Ensure all work is recorded correctly, dated and retained for road safety compliance
- Accurately record movement and use of parts; update stock records each day
- Liaise with the Garage Director weekly on parts and consumables to be ordered
- Responsible for end‑to‑end movement of all transport units to minimise time in the garage
- Deal with operational issues as they arise and resolve matters to the satisfaction of the Garage Director
- Monitor the operation of the business and provide input for continuous improvement of systems, scheduling and manpower planning – especially around seasonal demands
- Provide daily, weekly and monthly reports and updates to the Garage Director
