Overview
About the Role
My client is looking for a talented and motivated Transport Planning Engineer to join their Transport team. This is a hybrid role that combines transport planning with preliminary highway design. The ideal candidate will have experience in using AutoCAD and AutoTrack, with a passion for sustainable transport solutions and the built environment.
You'll play a key role in shaping developments through high-quality highway and sustainable travel design, supporting planning applications, and contributing to transport assessments and modelling. This is a design-focused planning role—not detailed or infrastructure design—and offers a great opportunity to expand your skills across both technical and policy-related workstreams.
Responsibilities
- Design highway junctions, including right-turn lanes, roundabouts, and signal-controlled junctions using AutoCAD.
- Review and assess development layouts for accessibility, efficiency, and safety.
- Provide technical input into drawings and swept path analysis.
- Check and review technical work and CAD outputs from junior staff.
- Contribute to the preparation of Transport Assessments, Statements, and supporting documents.
- (Ideally) Use Junctions 10 (ARCADY & PICADY), LinSig, TRICS, TEMPro, and other modelling tools to support design and analysis.
- Assist in the production and configuration of traffic flow diagrams.
- Liaise with clients, local authorities, and stakeholders; attend meetings and workshops.
- Mentor and support junior team members through on-the-job training and technical development.
Essential Skills & Qualifications
- Proficient in AutoCAD and AutoTrack.
- Experience with preliminary highway design (e.g. Stage 1 junctions, right-turn lanes, signal junctions, roundabouts).
- Understanding of Manual for Streets, Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, and related highway layout guidance.
- Experience working within a transport consultancy or similar environment.
- Ability to clearly communicate technical information, both verbally and in writing.
- Organised and proactive, with strong time management and the ability to meet deadlines.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Desirable Skills
- Experience with traffic modelling software (Junctions 10, LinSig, etc.).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel (e.g., creating traffic flow diagrams).
- Familiarity with TRICS and TEMPro.
- Knowledge of planning policies and transport-related guidance (e.g. NPPF, DfT guidance, local transport plans).
- Keen interest in sustainable transport, placemaking, healthy streets, and transport appraisal.
Key Competencies
- Analytical thinking
- Problem solving
- Adaptability
- Teamwork and collaboration
- Commercial awareness
- Resilience and a proactive attitude
