Job description

We wish to recruit a translator to join the Welsh Language Unit at NWSSP.

We are a large team of translators, supporting NWSSP and other NHS Wales organisations with translation services.

The work is varied and interesting. We translate a wide range of content varying from web-pages, patient information leaflets, publicity campaigns, job descriptions, policies, system interfaces and applications.

You must have significant experience in translating and proof-reading and editing text from English to Welsh and vice versa, ideally in the health & social care sector.

You must have an excellent command of grammar in both languages and a degree in the Welsh language or similar.

We offer excellent rates of pay for the right candidate with the relevant qualifications, skills and experience.

You will have knowledge and understanding of using translation memory software and term-bases and will be able to translate a minimum of between 3,500 to 5,000 words per working day.

We have offices in Cardiff, Nantgarw, Swansea, Pontypool and St Asaph. We also offer hybrid working and the opportunity to work from home.

The salary range is £31,516 to £38,364 - Band 5. We can consider appointing above the bottom of the salary range for a candidate who has the necessary qualifications and experience.

Main duties of the job

Provide written translations of various documents from English to Welsh and Welsh to English, using a variety of IT tools, including, but not limited to Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, using translation memory software such as Phrase. As a member of the team, the translator will translate a wide range of interesting, complex, technical, confidential and sensitive documents. The translator will also be responsible for translating publications, reports, policies, agendas, minutes, board papers, press releases, letters, forms, recruitment papers and web content/social media content.

Translate information, documents and forms for patients, service users and the public at large which requires accuracy and the use of the most appropriate language, terminology, style and syntax for the subject and recipients.

Proof-read your own work and the work of other members of the team. Ensure that translations meet editorial quality.

Follow the protocols and procedures that are in place within the Welsh Language Unit to deliver a high quality, timely and accurate translation services to our clients within NHS Wales.

Prepare all documents prior to translation, ensuring that the document is grammatically correct. This will entail communicating with the author of the document to gain a greater understanding of the subject e.g. policies and procedures.

Qualifications and/or Knowledge
  • Degree in either Welsh or Translation Studies or extensive experience of translating from English to Welsh/Welsh to English
  • Knowledge of 'translation memory' packages such as Phrase
  • A member of the Society of Welsh Translators or working towards membership
  • Understanding of the requirements of the Welsh Language Standards
Experience
  • Experience of translating and proof-reading approx. 3,500 - 5,000 words per working day
  • Significant experience in written translation work
  • Previous experience of working in a team
  • Experience of managing own workload with minimal supervision
Aptitude and Abilities
  • A confident understanding of the natural characteristics, grammar and syntax of the Welsh and English languages
  • Ability to cope with considerable work pressure at times
