About The Role

Title: Trainee Project Archaeologists, Project Archaeologists, Project Supervisors

Location: NOTTINGHAM & SHEFFIELD*

Salary: £24,238 – £29,264 per annum (dependant on role and experience)

Hours of Work: 37 per week

  • travel to sites across the UK will be required

Trainee Project Archaeologists: £24,238 per annum

Posts of up to 6 months are available for Graduate Trainees, with good potential for extension following successful completion of the training programme. Trainees (under 6 months experience) will receive one on one training with our supportive, experienced site staff, as well as contact time with our Training Officer, who will monitor overall progression. Skills acquisition and development will be documented in regular meetings with a key contact and measured against key competencies outlined in our Career Development Manual and the BAJR Archaeology Skills Passport. After 6 months, successful trainees will progress to Project Archaeologist grade.

Applicants will be expected to work locally within the region and farther afield, the latter for extended periods of time and involving staying away from home Monday-Friday; accommodation, transport and subsistence funds will be provided.

Essential Criteria:

  • A degree in archaeology or related discipline and an appropriate level of demonstrable experience

Project Archaeologists: £25,800 per annum

York Archaeology delivers commercial archaeological services from offices at York, Sheffield and Nottingham. The organisation provides world famous heritage attractions with excavation, survey, consultancy, expert conservation services, research and an unmatched commitment to dissemination, engagement and public benefit.

We require additional field staff (Project Archaeologists), operating from our Nottingham office, to deliver a wide range of archaeological projects, including sites of prehistoric, Roman and medieval date, both rural and urban. Permanent contracts are on offer subject to satisfactory completion of a 6-month probation period, with an immediate start. Applicants will be expected to work locally within the region and farther afield; accommodation, transport and subsistence funds will be provided.

Essential Criteria:

  • A degree in archaeology or related discipline and an appropriate level of demonstrable experience
  • 6 months experience within commercial fieldwork, or demonstrable equivalent experience

Desirable Criteria:

  • A full, UK driving licence would be advantageous, but not essential
  • CIfA membership would be advantageous, but not essential
  • A First Aid at Work certificate would be advantageous, but not essential

Project Supervisors: £27,051 – £29,264 per annum

We require Project Supervisors to assist Project Officers in implementing agreed programmes of fieldwork within strict time and budgetary constraints. This could include the supervision of small to medium field teams, independent excavation, survey and recording, or elements of post-excavation analysis and reporting.

Essential Criteria:

  • A degree in archaeology or related discipline and an appropriate level of demonstrable experience
  • Experience supervising small to medium sized teams across a varied portfolio of site types, or a willingness to learn
  • A full, UK driving licence; and willingness to drive teams and crew vehicles, following successful completion of our driver’s training course

Desirable Criteria:

  • CIfA membership would be advantageous, but not essential
  • A First Aid at Work certificate would be advantageous, but not essential
