Overview

Swegon is recruiting for a Test Technician to report to the Product Test and Development Manager, based at our site in Whitstable, Kent. The role is on site, and the ideal candidate will live nearby or within an easily commutable distance.

Responsibilities
  • Support and carry out fire resistance testing of dampers and related HVAC products through hands-on construction of test builds, installation of products, setup of instrumentation and test rigs, and operation of fire test equipment to ensure consistent and repeatable test conditions.
  • Adhere to health, safety, and environmental procedures due to the use of heavy structures, tools and live fire testing equipment.
  • Work primarily at the company’s in-house testing facility and also at external test houses to prepare, install, and execute certification and development fire tests.
  • Build, set up, and run tests and maintain accurate records of builds and installation details for test traceability where required.
Health & Safety
  • Work at all times in accordance with company health & safety policies, risk assessments, method statements, and safe systems of work.
  • Contribute to maintaining a safe working environment within the test facility and workshop.
  • Correctly use PPE, lifting equipment, and safety systems associated with furnaces, heavy test frames, and construction activities.
Build & Test Rig Construction
  • Construct walls (primarily standard plasterboard constructions) and floors for fire test rigs in accordance with standards such as BS EN 1363-1 and project-specific requirements.
  • Install fire and smoke dampers, ductwork sections, insulation systems, and associated fixings per drawings, test standards, and manufacturer requirements.
  • Assist with the assembly, modification, and dismantling of fire test rigs.
  • Maintain accurate records of builds and installation details for test traceability where required.
Fire Testing & Technical Operations
  • Prepare, set up, and conduct fire resistance tests in line with relevant standards (e.g., BS EN 1366-2).
  • Set up and monitor instrumentation and test equipment per defined procedures.
  • Ensure test rigs are correctly installed, sealed, and instrumented prior to testing.
  • Support the safe execution of live fire tests, following all health & safety procedures.
Test Support & Coordination
  • Work closely with Test Engineers, Design, and Engineering teams to ensure test objectives and technical requirements are met.
Experience
  • Essential: Strong practical, hands-on background in construction, building trades, workshop environments, or test rig assembly.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and standards.
  • Experience in carpentry, masonry, metalwork, or mechanical installation (preferred).
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving ability.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external organisations.
  • Understanding of health & safety requirements in high-risk environments (e.g., furnaces, heavy structures, tools).
  • Full, valid UK driving licence and willingness to travel to external test houses.
Qualifications
  • Essential: GCSEs or equivalent including Maths and English.
  • Relevant vocational qualification or equivalent practical experience.
