Overview

Post Title: Technical Officer (Pharmaceutical and Analytical Chemistry)

SBU/Department: School of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (Technical)

FTE: 1.0FTE (37 hours per week)

Duration of Contract: Permanent

Annual Leave: 25 days plus standard public holidays and an additional 4 days including the closure of our office between Christmas and New Year

Location: College Lane Campus, Hatfield

Responsibilities

The Technical Team supports a wide and diverse range of subjects including Biosciences, Pharmacy, Allied Health Professions, Sports Science, Psychology, Geography, Environment and Planning. The successful applicant will be responsible for the following:

  • Preparation of materials (including chemicals) and equipment for Pharmaceutical and Analytical Chemistry teaching sessions
  • Clearing and safely disposing of materials after sessions are complete
  • Maintaining laboratories in a clean and tidy state
  • Ensuring equipment is in good condition, safe to use and calibrated as necessary
  • Maintaining equipment inventories and ensuring that health and safety practices are implemented and observed
  • Providing contact with undergraduate and postgraduate students at all stages of their learning
Skills and experience required

You will have good written and verbal communication skills, be reliable and a team player, and show initiative with the ability to work independently when necessary. You will be able to explain and demonstrate techniques to staff and students, and follow detailed instructions comprehensively. You will be flexible, adaptable and reliable with a methodical approach and attention to detail. Good IT, numeracy and timekeeping skills are essential. Practical experience of working in a pharmaceutical chemistry laboratory would be advantageous in a technical role, as will knowledge and experience of analytical chemistry and pharmaceutics.

Qualifications

You will have a minimum of five GCSEs or equivalents, including Mathematics and English at grade C/4 or above. You will have A levels or equivalent in a science subject or proven experience.
