Job description
Overview

Cockwells Modern & Classic Boatbuilding Ltd. are renowned for working at the cutting edge of technology and innovation, fusing the artisan skills of the shipwright with modern materials and methods and are looking for the right candidate to help with the technical design of our bespoke superyacht tenders.

The successful candidate will be responsible for creating and monitoring weight estimates and assisting with RCD compliance. General CAD drafting work may also be undertaken.

A comprehensive understanding of small craft regulations, naval architecture and structural design would be well received. Designers with experience in the industry or a degree in Yacht Design and Production (or similar) would be preferred for this role. However, we will also consider students looking for a year long work placement for this role provided their course covers the scope of work we are looking for and experience has been gained in previous university years.

Responsibilities

After initial induction and familiarisation with the company, the successful candidate will report to the Design Director in this busy, growing organisation. The candidate will:

  • Create weight estimate documents for our latest superyacht tenders and production boats
  • Monitor these weight estimates as components are made and assembled on the shop floor. Check centre of gravity positions and hook weights are not overloaded.
  • Assist with design of vessels to make sure they are RCD compliant.
  • Read technical reports from subcontractors, such as Noise Reports and report findings back to Design
  • Director for implementation into vessel design.
  • Be present on sea trials to help with stability and sound testing and recording of data for Cockwells use and RCD requirements.
  • Provide technical support to the shop floor team.
  • Work with the composites team to create a database of layup records
  • Keep the network in order with correct version control on documents.
About you

The successful candidate ideally has experience in the industry or a degree in Yacht Design and Production (or similar) and be confident in assisting with the technical aspects of boat design. It would be an added bonus if you are able to produce 2D drawings and 3D models for a variety of components.

Essential Requirements
  • Proficient in the use of Rhino3D and the add-on Orca.
  • Ability to set out technical drawings in 2D.
  • Prior experience creating weight estimates.
  • Ability to accurately weigh and measure components on the shop floor and monitor weight documents throughout the boat build.
  • Knowledge of the RCD
  • Have structural design experience
