The Lead Technical Accounting Manager is responsible for providing expert technical accounting guidance across the Metro Bank Group, ensuring compliance with IFRS and maintaining high standards of financial integrity and control.
As Technical Accounting Manager, you’ll be the go-to expert on all matters relating to IFRS and complex accounting across Metro Bank. You’ll ensure the Group’s financial statements are accurate, compliant, and aligned with accounting standards and regulatory expectations.
This role will also lead the consistent application of the Group accounting policies and procedures.
You’ll play a key role in hedge accounting and the wider management of financial instruments, ensuring compliance with IFRS 9 and supporting Treasury in designing and maintaining effective hedging strategies.
This is a hands‑on role requiring strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex accounting concepts clearly to non‑technical stakeholders.
What I need to do – my accountabilities
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Accounting & Advisory
- Lead the assessment and documentation of complex accounting issues under IFRS.
- Develop and maintain the Group accounting policy manual, ensuring consistent application across all entities.
- Prepare technical accounting position papers for complex transactions or judgemental areas (e.g., business combinations, financial instruments, share‑based payments, leases and impairment reviews).
- Support in interpreting and implementing new accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
- Act as the key liaison point with external auditors on technical accounting matters.
- Hedge Accounting & Financial Instruments
- Lead the end‑to‑end hedge accounting process under IFRS 9, including:
- Reviewing hedge designations and ensuring appropriate documentation is in place.
- Performing prospective and retrospective hedge effectiveness testing.
- Monitoring hedge performance and ensuring timely rebalancing or de‑designation where required.
- Reviewing hedge accounting entries and disclosures in the financial statements.
- Provide technical support to Treasury on derivative and risk management structures.
- Ensure financial instrument valuations and disclosures meet IFRS 7 and IFRS 13 requirements.
- Financial Reporting & Control
- Support the month‑end and year‑end close process by reviewing technical areas of the financial statements.
- Prepare or review disclosure notes for complex accounting areas (e.g., financial instruments, fair value measurement, business combinations).
- Strengthen the financial control environment through the design and documentation of accounting and reporting controls.
- Provide ad hoc technical accounting training to Finance and Treasury teams.
- Stakeholder Management
- Partner with Treasury, FP&A, Tax, Property and Legal to ensure appropriate accounting outcomes for business initiatives.
- Provide clear, actionable technical guidance to non‑technical stakeholders, including senior management.

Skills
Fully qualified accountant (ACCA, ACA, or equivalent) with significant post‑qualification experience in a technical accounting or financial reporting role.
Strong knowledge of IFRS, particularly IFRS 9, IFRS 13, IFRS 15, IFRS 16, and IFRS 3.
Demonstrable experience with hedge accounting and derivative instruments.
Strong Excel skills, with the ability to manipulate large data models and deliver meaningful outputs.
Knowledge
Previous experience in financial services, listed, or complex multi‑entity environments preferred.
Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and written communication skills.
Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high‑quality outputs under tight deadlines.
Essential role‑specific qualifications
- ACA qualified or equivalent – Big 4 background preferable
- 5 years+ PQE in a technical role within a finance environment or external audit

- Experience of drafting and reviewing interim and annual financial statements.
- Experience of Financial Services, ideally Retail Banking, highly desired.
- Experience in PQE in a technical role within a finance environment or external audit.
- Experience with consolidation systems (preferably Workday).
- Exposure to regulatory reporting or prudential frameworks (for financial institutions).
