About the English Department

The English Department aims to provide students with a rich and diverse curriculum. Our programme of study therefore spans a variety of periods, places, genres and forms as we hope to enthuse our students with a wide and plentiful subject offering. As a result, we are keen to draw on teachers\' own enthusiasm and expertise as we regularly update and refine our teaching. At Key Stage 3, the English curriculum offers students exposure to a range of canonical and heritage texts alongside more contemporary YA material. We utilise text to support the ongoing mastery of key skills, particularly in terms of the production of analytical and creative compositions. Oracy and literacy are embedded across all years, and the Department is supported by the Director of Literacy and Oracy. In Year 10 and 11, students begin their study of IGCSE English Language and English Literature, following the Pearson Edexcel and CIE specifications respectively. Results for both awards are consistently high and reflect the positive attitude and engagement of our students. A Level study of English Literature also continues to thrive with several of our sixth form students opting to continue with the study of English at undergraduate level. For this qualification, the department follows the OCR A Level specification, specialising in both American and Dystopian fiction. The English Department is also excited to offer a wider enrichment programme, ranging from theatre visits, visiting speakers and creative writing workshops. We also organise and run a range of societies and clubs that are readily taken up by the students, including Podcasting, Young Writers, Middle and Upper School Book Club, \'First Chapters\' and A Level LitSoc. The department is complemented by an excellent library that is a central hub for many of our students.
