WHAT DOES A SYSTEMS ENGINEER DO AT AMAZON?

On a typical day engineers might dive deep into understanding the root cause of a customer issue, investigate why a metric is trending the wrong way and consult with the top engineers at Amazon. As a Systems Engineer at Amazon you will utilise your Linux skills to troubleshoot, innovate fixes and workarounds, keep software up-to-date and provide data and metrics that help manage the capacity and efficiency of our services. You will draw on your networking knowledge to identify and troubleshoot network connectivity issues. You understand system design best practices and the importance of implementing systems and services that are secure, scalable, reliable, resilient, efficient and performant. You communicate clearly and collaborate with others to deliver results. You are a self‑starter, comfortable dealing with ambiguity and change. You are customer‑obsessed, always looking to understand customer pain points and find resolutions quickly and completely.

Key job responsibilities
  • Work proactively to solve potential problems and inefficiencies. Communicate clearly and collaborate with others to deliver results with minimal supervision.
  • Participating in 24/7 on‑call rotation to troubleshoot high severity issues
  • Analysing dashboards and investigating metrics with the vision for improvements
  • Create and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and runbooks for documentation
  • Discuss radical new approaches to automate operational issues, assess risks and develop creative solutions
  • Develop strategies for resolving identified problems to prevent future occurrences
  • Assist others in the team
Basic Qualifications
  • Experience in site reliability engineering (SRE), systems engineering, systems administration, DevOps, security administration, or network administration
  • Experience working with Linux
  • Experience in systems engineering
  • Experience in any of the following: Python, Java, Perl, PHP, Ruby, Bash, Shell or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP and networking protocols such as HTTP and DNS
  • Experience designing and developing scripts to automate operational burdens and reviewing scripting changes to ensure they meet the standards for maintainability, scalability and security
  • Experience working in 24/7 production environment
  • Experience with service‑oriented architecture and web services
