Overview

We are recruiting for a student midwife to join our Maternity services at the Royal London Hospital.

The two-year Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery aims to produce competent, caring, autonomous and evidenced-based midwives, capable of delivering effective woman-centred care for mothers, birthing people and their families in any context.

Midwives of the 21st century practice within dynamic, rapidly changing and diverse contexts and require personal, academic and professional skills to practice in an optimum way.

During the two-year course, time will be spent 50% with London South Bank University Southwark and 50% with The Royal London Hospital Barts Health NHS Trust.

Entry criteria
  • A registered Adult nurse (level 1) with current registration with the NMC
  • A Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 2:2, with a minimum qualification of Diploma in Higher Education with evidence of study at Level 6
  • Post qualification clinical working experience as an adult nurse on the NMC register in the UK
  • For applicants whose English is not their first language, they must achieve a minimum score of 7.0 overall or equivalent, with not less than 7.0 in the listening, speaking and reading sections and not less than 6.5 in the writing section for the IELTS, or for the OET with minimum B grade, or you have completed a pre-registration programme taught and examined in English with sufficient clinical exposure and recent practice in an English-majority country
Funding and eligibility

Students applying for this funded training post (mid-point band 5 salary) should note that this training grant will also include University tuition fees of £9535 per annum.

Responsibilities and qualifications
  • To attain a registered midwifery qualification.
  • To communicate effectively with women and their families and provide a high standard of midwifery care throughout preconception, antenatal, intra-partum and postnatal periods under the supervision of the Registered Midwife/Mentor.
  • To diagnose pregnancy, assess and monitor women holistically throughout the preconception, antenatal, intra-partum and postnatal stages through the use of a range of assessment methods and reach valid, reliable and comprehensive conclusions under the supervision of the Registered Midwife/Mentor.
  • To work towards achieving the midwifery standards of proficiency agreed with the HEI provider and set out in the Midwifery Practice Assessment Document.
  • To work towards achieving experience under supervision of the activities of the midwife as outlined in the European Union Midwives Directive (80/155/EEC Article 4).
