Staff Nurse – Pre-Assessment

37.5 Hours | Cherwell Hospital

Overview

The Cherwell Hospital is currently looking to recruit an exceptional Pre-Assessment Nurse to provide specialist nursing expertise, facilitating evidence-based, patient-centered care and assessment for a defined caseload of pre-assessment patients.

Responsibilities
  • Work independently and collaboratively with a team of nurses and healthcare assistants to coordinate patients throughout the pre-assessment pathway, with input into management and care prior to admission for specified procedures.
  • Act as a resource and provide education for patients and healthcare personnel, and direct the pre-assessment nursing team.
  • Carry out relevant forms of care without direct supervision within the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Support all members of staff within the Outpatient department, including students of nursing and visiting healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in teaching and mentoring of students and junior staff.
  • Suggest improvements in care provision, challenge poor practice, and raise concerns to the relevant agencies where appropriate.
  • Ensure the nursing philosophy of care for pre-operative assessment is reflected in practice.
  • Provide a high standard of nursing care to patients attending the Outpatient department, working within agreed policies and procedures.
  • Act as liaison with the multi-disciplinary team and contribute to work involved in the Anesthetic Meeting / Complex MDT meeting, escalating complex patients and helping plan their care.
  • Collaborate with and consult the multi-professional health care team and patient, communicating sensitive and complex information.
  • Use highly developed communication skills to guide, advise and support patients, ward/physio/theatre staff regarding management of proposed admission and its impact on patients/carers.
  • Identify and overcome barriers to patient understanding when communicating complex or distressing information.
  • Provide verbal and written information to enable informed consent for treatment, using specialist knowledge.
  • Establish partnerships with patients/carers and communicate in potentially distressing or emotional circumstances.
  • Provide, receive, interpret and communicate complex information with a range of health care personnel.
  • Act as patient advocate, ensuring informed consent, privacy and dignity are maintained (NMC).
  • Carry out health promotion within the role using information leaflets and networking with other specialist health care staff around the Trust as necessary.
  • Critically reflect on own performance through supervision/action learning.

It is equipped with an onsite Imaging Department offering X-Ray, Ultrasound and MRI, and a dedicated Physiotherapy Unit with a rehabilitation gym, designed for orthopaedic care.
