Job description
Job Summary

22.5 hours per week. The role supports men with complex mental health needs and additional risks in a 12‑bed male inpatient ward outside Plymouth. You will deliver high‑quality, risk‑managed care, participate in a multidisciplinary team, and mentor junior staff.

Responsibilities
  • Act as the named nurse for identified clients, following the Electronic Care Programme Approach (eCPA) procedures.
  • Assess, plan, implement, review and evaluate individualised care plans in partnership with clients, carers and multi‑agency professionals.
  • Maintain comprehensive risk assessment records and communicate risks to the team and wider service, including referral to probation or child protection as appropriate.
  • Participate actively in MDT meetings, new referral assessments, clinical reviews and case conferences, and convene necessary meetings.
  • Offer support, advice and reassurance to carers, involving them in care planning and providing guidance on accessing external support services.
  • Lead and mentor junior staff, create a learning environment and supervise pre‑ and post‑registration students.
  • Document accurate, legible clinical notes and manage medication safely, in line with NMC guidelines and Livewell policies.
  • Adhere to infection control, health & safety, COSHH, fire, and food hygiene regulations and report issues to line management.
Managerial Duties
  • Take responsibility for unit management in the absence of senior staff, planning daily clinical activity and adjusting rotas.
  • Encourage staff development, provide informal clinical supervision and direct staff to evidence‑based resources.
  • Maintain finances for petty cash, patient monies, stock control, and vehicle mileage records.
  • Lead risk assessments and plan safe patient transport.
  • Supervise and appraise junior staff.
Professional Development
  • Attend mandatory training including Physical Intervention Training.
  • Participate in the Livewell appraisal system and continue professional learning (PREP and other evidence‑based developments).
  • Receive line management support and clinical supervision.
Qualifications
  • Essential: RMN / Dip HE BSc Mental Health RNLD, NMC registration.
  • Desirable: Mentorship qualification.
Experience & Skills
  • Essential: Multi‑disciplinary working, relevant mental health experience with adults, ability to supervise junior staff, line management experience.
  • Essential Skills: Assessment, communication, liaison, leadership, supervision, team working, self‑management, risk assessment, crisis management, de‑escalation, lone working, computer skills.
  • Desirable Skills: Therapeutic interventions, knowledge of the Care Quality Commission, car driving, group interaction, positive risk management.
  • Knowledge: Confidentiality, mental illnesses, safeguarding and MCA, Mental Health Act, NICE guidelines, electronic patient record systems, substance misuse.
