STAFF SOFTWARE ENGINEER – LEGAL AI

Company Overview

A pre-seed funded Legal AI start-up is building an intelligent platform to transform how law firms and in-house legal teams work. Backed by respected early-stage investors, the business has already built a functioning prototype and is now preparing for its Seed raise.

As part of their next phase of growth, the founder is looking to establish the core engineering team before going out for the Seed round. This is an opportunity to join at a foundational stage and help shape the product, architecture and technical culture from day zero.

Role Overview

The Staff Software Engineer will work directly with the founder to evolve the existing prototype into a scalable, production-ready platform. The product is powered by Graph Intelligence, using a graph-orchestrated architecture to model legal relationships, optimise workflows and drive contextual reasoning across documents and entities.

This role is ideal for someone operating at Staff level who wants significant ownership, the chance to shape the technical strategy and the opportunity to work with cutting-edge graph-based AI patterns in a high-growth environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the evolution of the Legal AI platform from prototype to production-ready architecture.
• Build core platform features using graph-orchestrated workflows and knowledge graph infrastructure.
• Develop full-stack components that integrate AI, LLMs and graph-based reasoning directly into legal workflows.
• Define engineering standards, tooling and processes suitable for secure, compliant legal environments.
• Integrate and optimise LLMs and AI services on top of the graph intelligence layer.
• Build scalable cloud-native systems designed for rapid growth and increasing graph complexity.
• Work closely with the founder on product strategy, technical decisions and early customer validation.
• Influence early technical hires and help shape the engineering culture ahead of the Seed round.
• Own quality, performance and maintainability across the entire stack.

Required Skills and Experience

• Experience as a Staff Software Engineer or Senior Engineer performing at Staff-level ownership.
• Strong full-stack engineering skills with modern frameworks and cloud-native platforms.
• Experience building Legal AI, LegalTech, document intelligence or AI-enabled products.
• Familiarity with knowledge graphs, graph databases or graph-based orchestration systems is highly desirable.
• Experience integrating LLMs or AI services into production environments.
• Proven ability to take early-stage products from prototype or MVP to scalable releases.
• Comfortable working autonomously in an early-stage, high-ownership environment.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work fully remote across Europe.
