Job description
Overview

Applicants are invited for ST4 or above Tier 2 trainee or Clinical Fellow in Paediatrics for Colchester Hospital. We have 2 posts available due to start in either September or December 2025.

We are recruiting to maintain a fully staffed rota, seeking passionate doctors who will work alongside our consultants and wider MDT to deliver high quality care and develop our service. There will be opportunity to develop subspecialty interest and support provided with sitting for clinical examination.

The clinical duties will include attending to and managing Paediatric patients presenting to Children’s Assessment unit, which might include referrals from primary care and Emergency medicine, leading ward rounds and attending to Paediatric emergencies. They will also cover the neonatal unit, postnatal ward and attend to neonatal emergencies on the labour ward and theatres. The post holder will be working closely and overseeing the tier 1 doctors and nurse practitioners on the Tier 1 rota. We are a very supportive group of consultants who will be working closely with the appointee and supervising them. Ipswich is a busy DGH and the post-holder will have a good opportunity to gain wide experience in Paediatrics.

Responsibilities
  • There will be a weekly commitment to a general outpatient and a rapid referral clinic and to acute emergency cover; this will depend on the training timetable allocated for each six month period.
  • The doctor will undertake child protection medicals under supervision of the attending consultant.
  • The post-holder’s day-to-day duties will include:
    • Assessment and management of in-patients in the Children’s Ward and Neonatal Unit, including participating in ward rounds under supervision
    • Assessment and management of sick children in the Children’s Assessment Unit
    • Assessment and management of sick children in the Emergency Department when an opinion is requested, including emergencies and resuscitations
    • Attendance at difficult obstetric deliveries and resuscitation of new-born infants
    • Weekly outpatient clinic under consultant supervision
    • Participation in the Tier 2 (middle grade) out of hours’ medical rota on a pro-rata basis, including evening, night and weekend shifts
    • Dedicated admin time to ensure all paperwork/communication with other services is up-to-date
    • Participation in clinical supervision of junior medical staff
    • Working in partnership with medical and nursing teams and other MDT members to ensure children, young people and their families have seamless, planned care to meet their needs
    • Outpatient Clinics in the post holder’s specialist area
