Main duties of the job

The role of Speech and Language Therapist is to provide a high quality, evidence-based speech and language therapy service which promotes participation and functional activity of children and young people. You will provide speech and language therapy to children and young people accessing The Childrens Trust School, including assessment and intervention to children and young people with acquired brain injuries, neurodisabilities and neurodevelopmental conditions.

Our service delivery aims to promote outcome focussed interventions, safe care, function and participation of children and young people accessing home, school, and community life. You will support the delivery of child and family focused, goal led interventions, working in collaboration with education, multi-agency, and multidisciplinary teams.

Job responsibilities

ClinicalSkills and Responsibilities

Providehigh quality, evidence-based speech and language therapy provision for childrenand young people attending The Childrens Trust School, in partnership withother members of the Multidisciplinary Team and education services.

Undertakespeech and language therapy assessments of children with complex needs e.g.,multiple co-morbidities, neurodisabilities and chronic conditions, throughstandardised and non-standardised assessments and clinical observations.

Devisesuitable, individualised, speech and language therapy programmes/strategiesthat fit within the childs daily routine, whether to be carried out by parentsor members of the Multidisciplinary Team; these should be monitored, evaluated,and adjusted appropriately according to the needs of the child.

Developtherapy goals, in collaboration with the child and family/carers, as well asthe multidisciplinary and education teams, other health professionals andagencies, to facilitate the participation of the child in their life skills.

Setoutcomes as part of the child or young persons annual review and Education,Health, and Care Plans.

Supportthe multidisciplinary and education teams with measuring short term targets,through using the IMpacts curriculum, therapy outcome measurement tools e.g.,Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS).

Keepappropriate and accurate intervention records, fulfilling legal, professionaland all other requirements of The Childrens Trust.

Contributeto child related reports, including looked after children and annual reviewreports as required, and assist with the collation of these as required, in atimely manner in line with organisational targets.

Supportthe delivery of a tiered model approach to speech and language therapy at TheChildrens Trust School, providing regular integrated time to classes andHouses.

Workclosely with all members of the Multidisciplinary Team, as well as the childand family, to provide a fully integrated approach to the overall management ofthe child. This will include any home/school visits, professional child relatedmeetings and/ or appointments, as required.

Provideclinical cover across the service during episodes of staff shortage/heavyworkload, in order to ensure effective service delivery.

Workflexibly in terms of hours, including the ability to work an early evening(weekly) and one weekend day, per calendar month.

Communication

Developeffective communication strategies with children/young people (applying theprinciples of total communication).

Facilitateeffective communication with families and members of the MultidisciplinaryTeam.

Maintainclear and concise documents and records, in accordance with The ChildrensTrust policies.

Ensuredocuments are managed confidentially at all times.

Attendregular meetings with the multidisciplinary team, to discuss individualchildren/ young people and service in general, as required e.g., reviews, caseconferences, parents evenings, clinics.

Management of Self and Others

Toprovide support and supervision for volunteers and students within area ofresponsibility, providing motivation and support to achieve key objectives.

Toparticipate in the annual Performance Development Review and monthlysupervision sessions as required by The Childrens Trust, both as appraiser andappraise.

Tomanage time effectively, ensuring they prioritise their workload appropriatelyand delegate work as required.

Towork closely with specialist and highly specialist & specialist therapistsand multi-disciplinary technicians, seeking advice, supervision, and support asneeded.

Governance

Readand implement all policies, procedures, and risk assessments pertinent toworking practice and keep up to date with policy changes as they occur.

Criticallyevaluate practice (with support) through clinical audit findings, combined withknowledge of evidence-based practice and identify opportunities for serviceimprovement and development.

Criticallyreflect on own performance and that of other staff, and use this evaluation toenhance the effectiveness, efficiency, and quality of future practice.
